I would do stuff to my Disco today, but it's got the starter solenoid issue I think, it's just clicking when trying to start. :( As I don't have a repair kit at hand, is there anything temporary I can do to get the thing to start, even if it's only for the next few days.
I've seen a video on the tube showing that removing the plunger and filing around the ring can temporally fix the issue... any views?

The usual reason why the starter solenoid fails is because of arcing on the contacts, particularly when the contacts open after starting. That arcing creates pitting and burnt areas on the contacts, so yes stripping down and cleaning could well get you out of trouble, until you can get a repair kit. I don't know how viable it is on the Disco starter solenoid, I've never stripped one but in the past on other such devices I've been able to turn the switch "bar" upsidedown so as to present a completely new face to the two static contacts.

Another reason could bed that the plunger in the solenoid could be sticking, but the fact that you can hear a clicking would suggest that this isn't the case this time.

Good News :D Took the plunger out of the solenoid and gave it a good clean as it was a bit oily, which can't be good for the electrical aspect. Found the copper washer to be quite pitted, but not as bad as I would have expected. Anyway, using some very fine emery paper, I cleaned up the faces that showed pitting and put it all back together. Started at first turn...

Hopefully this will get me through the next few days until the proper repair kit arrives.

They normally are when left abandoned in a field.;)

Still trying to get some back wheel braking on mine. Still it now has a clutch and some brake movement at the front end. Hoping to give the axle stands a holiday soon for a couple of days, they've earned it.
