I know its been asked before but I cant find it again. To distinguish if you have a LT77 or R380 you need to look at where reverse is located. This much I can rember... what I cant remember is which one is which. Please help

All the LT77 versions have a slap left and up.

The R380s are down and to the right.

Seeing as I'm a Landy newbie, in there any pros/cons to having either one of these gearboxes?

Yes.

There were 4 versions of the LT77. It was used on many vehicles, LRs, Rovers, TVRs, Morgans..etc. The later version (mid-80s on) is the best of the lot. They are a "notchy" shift and not rated for much bhp.

They have an internal lubrication pump which is very sensitive to which transmission fluid is used. Use the wrong one and the results can be sad in as little as a few miles. Despite this, the wrong fluid is OFTEN used. A LT77 takes ATF (yes ATF!) Dextron 2 or 3.

The R380 is a far more modern box. Outside of its ratios and length (3hich makes it a LT77 swap), it shares nothing with the LT77s. It is rated for almost double the bhp as the LT77s and has a very liquidy shift.

However. it too needs the right fluid. A MTF94. That is Castrol SMX-S. (If you are in North America, Castrol NA does not sell it there. In that area of the world, go for Amsoil Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (MTF) SAE 5W-30

The R380 comes in many configurations for different vehicles..unlike the LT77. Try to get one made after March 1999.

Both the LT77 and the R380 should never be towed with the rear wheels on the ground.

ARWOOOOOHAAA!

ARRRWOOOOOOHA!

Anorak alert ! Anorak alert !:D :p

Did you cut and paste that? or just type it outta book?

No. It is all mine...and now yours.

Shame the guy only asked which gearbox was which

I guess I got confused. How would you interpret the following?

Seeing as I'm a Landy newbie, in there any pros/cons to having either one of these gearboxes?

However, now that I understand the level of answer you can understand, try this;

Later R380 = GOOD
all others = IFFY

Is that better?

I always thought the LT77 was better than the R380?

Heavens no.

I do not suggest that a LT77, if maintained carefully, will not last a very reasonable time before requiring a rebuild. However, as noted, it often has a "notchy" feel, can be tempermental, and is rated for a more modest bhp and torque.

The very early R380s had a couple of teething issues but they were resolved in the final version. The shift feel and the box's strength are much better than a LT77.

Right then seeing as you lot seem to know your gearboxes, ours is a R380 (according to this thread) and occasionally slip's out of 2nd gear (I have to hold the gear lever in place at times to stop it slipping out) which is a tad annoying, any thoughts on the cause:confused:

Tnx for the gearbox info gomog

may be a broken tooth..gear tooth that is. or a clutch adjustment. bog standard answers from me i'm afraid
