may be a broken tooth..gear tooth that is. or a clutch adjustment. bog standard answers from me i'm afraid

Broken gear tooth...sounds like an expensive job:((I aint no mechanic), got her booked in for a service next week so hopefully will know more then.

Right then seeing as you lot seem to know your gearboxes, ours is a R380 (according to this thread) and occasionally slip's out of 2nd gear (I have to hold the gear lever in place at times to stop it slipping out) which is a tad annoying, any thoughts on the cause:confused:

Just thoughts, not much definitive.

If you had the same problem with 3rd and 4th I would point you to the turret on the top of the gear shift. If you pull back the rubber on your would find two big springs, two adjuster screws and their locknuts. These springs and screws set the rest position of the gearstick when you let go of it and is referred to as the 3/4 bias setting. If it is improerly adjusted, 3/4 are odd..often slipping out if you get them in.

If you had weird vibration and metal dust in your transmission oil, I would say you have a gear problem..but you don't mention any of those symptoms, happily.

Assuming that the remote is well attached, and you are using the right gearbox fluid for this unit, I am going to guess the dog teeth are deteriorating or the balk ring clearance needs adjustment.

No matter what it is, a R380 rebuild costs the same whether it is gears, forks, or whatever, if you go to the right place. £445 is the best price from the right place. They simply exchange yours for a total rebuilt with a warranty. Otherwise, prices will vary from £250 to £1100 for unknown quality of repair.

Sounds like you are still in a stage where you can decide when you want to do it.

Tnx for the gearbox info gomog

Np.

I've now got sick feeling, I failed to mention that just before the gear slips out that there is a slight vibration giving us a warning the gear is not engaging & will slip out of place. I'll know more on wednesday when the Disco's getting a service and the transmission oil is changed. But in the meantime I wont sell our other car...just in case the gearbox needs to be rebuilt....looks like my motorbike funds are going to disapear:(

gear slip outta 2nd is normal in landys, especially the R380, it does it with ours every so often, we jsut live with it. But we have another problem with ours. It rattles like crazy unless you put your foot on the clutch, but it aint the clutch, its defo the gearbox, need a rebuilt one

I always thought the 2nd gear problem was just getting it into gear!, cross-fingers I wont have to rebuild the gearbox if what mine is doing is normal.

Just done 3 hours driving around Snowdonia and it didn't miss a beat, could just be my dodgy wrist action:eek:

Discovery 300 TDI

This is very common on both the 200 and the 300 TDi engined vehicles. Their clutch friction plate has a ring of springs which are used to mitigate the deisel engine knock and stop it being transmitted to the rest of the driveline. Often, these springs are too tight and a lot of the engine knock goes through to the gearbox anyway. This makes the gears "chatter" together when the box is in neutral and the clutch up. It will disappear almost completely when the clutch is depressed. The chatter can sound really bad on some vehicles. (It varies from car to car .) However, it is not detrimental to the life of the gearbox. It is simply a haracteristic of the LT77 and R380s with diesels rather than being a fault with either clutch or the gearbox.

I'm starting to think that not having driven a Disco properly for about 10 months+ (since last one got written off) it might be driver error, having got used to a Ford Mondeo (petrol) whilst looking for the Disco. I'm still getting it checked out though.
