What do you get on a full tank ??

200TDi and i do about 1000km on a full tank and this is always in the mountains up-down-up-down-up-down , max speed is about 90km/h , don't know what that would be in miles per gallon tho

Hi Robke,

If my calculations are right, that equates to 35.47mpg:

1000kms = 625 miles

81 (tdi 200 tank) ltrs = 17.62 gallons

So much for bollocks, fantasy figures etc - these vehicles can be economical, if you drive them right, as demonstrated above - in the mountains!!!

MPG needs to worked our accurately. Its no good by driving til the light comes on and calculating in terms of 'tankfuls' when its not even clear how big the tank is!

I fill mine up to first click on the pump (anymore might go out the vent and its precious stuff) I then drive to my destination and take note of the miles travelled. I then fill up again (where possible at the same garage and pump) and simply multiply litres used by 4.55 to find out how many gallons. Then divide distance travelled in miles by gallons used. Worst is 26 best is 32 so far. I am fitting a K&N and will be removing the viscous fan and will use the electric ones off the A/C. We will see if theres any difference. For the record - the handbook published by Landrover for my 300TDi states 47mpg at a constant 56mph. That really is a fairy tale!

ive just got my disco 300tdi auto 1 mounth ago had a p38 before that i drive every two weeks from essex to manchester the p38 was ok at averg speed 80 85mph 264 miles £47 the disco oh my god! its costing me 60 i will start to log this down and fill you in as i do the loggin
lots of fun
p.s. do eney ov you know were to go of roadin down in essex as im new to this area and it would realy be nice to try a few new places im near colchester thanks

I'm wondering how "accurate" we can actually be. Recorded mileage depends on speedo accuracy, which can be legally 10% out (if you have a GPS try comparing mph measured on GPS with the speedo reading). Non-standard tyres will further vary this, as will variations in tyre pressures. Then there's measuring the gallons: a couple of people said they get less mileage on supermarket diesel. I have read that garages are allowed to set their pumps to deliver less than a standard litre at calibration, to allow for wear in the pumps, and that some high throughput supermarkets will have their pumps calibrated once or more every day to take advantage of this (don't know how true this is). Then there's the diesel itself. Some versions (eg bio) seem to burn more efficiently. It won't give you huge variations, but they all add up. I think I'm getting 550-600 miles a tank now on my TD5 auto.:)

Had a hard time starting it today. Is it possible that when I put svo in yesterday, it has not mixed and gone up to the pump neat? I went for a 10 mile drive and filled up to the brim with derv since. I wonder if its time to change the fuel filter since I havent changed it since putting SVO in?

If you are buying your fuel from Sainsbury's, a Nectar Card will get you 1p a litre refund. If you also get a Sainsbury's credit card, you get 2p a litre refund. and if you are careful and only use the card at Sainsbury's, you'll get a year's interest free credit while you invest the cash elsewhere at 6%. No I don't work for them, but I buy my diesel there and it seems like quite a good deal.:)

No it doesn't !!! What relevance is to anyone that my Disco does 33.6mpg and yours does 32.73mpg. Look at the bigger picture. It has no relevance whatsoever.

However if my Disco manages about 33mpg and yours only does 21mpg then THAT IS A RELEVANT difference and worthy of investigation.

Please, don't get so knotted up in the minutiae of life, relax, enjoy life for the great experience it is.

You don't have to tell mer to relax and enjoy life I do that pretty well ta. The title of this thread is about how many miles you get on a tankful so I do think its relevant. My opinion is that anyone going on about MPG needs to be measuring it with some degree of accuracy. If everyone has a different way of doing it how can we do a comparison?

Hello

I recently monitered my fuel consumption for a month in which time I covered 1100 miles used a total of 160 litres of fuel which consisted of 146 litres SVO and 14 litres diesel which returned a MPG of 31.28 this included all my driving both on and off road. my truck is a 1993 200tdi with stainless sports exhaust and mud terrains and slightly increased boost

Yet again you demonstrate to me at least, that you are far from relaxed.

The purpose of this thread was so that the originator could share general information with others, not getting bogged down in finite details, it's the big picture he was after:

"I know some might give me the what they get mpg.
Im asking on the basis of a full to the brim of fuel any concoction Bio, veg oil diesel, what do you get out of it when the red light comes on.
My mate has tried it on his 200 tdi and have managed to get 605miles

The reason for my question is that mine will only do 460."

We all know that doing really accurate comparisons of fuel consumption is extremely difficult to achieve as there are a huge number of variables.

I believe that most readers on this forum are sufficiently grown up to understand and accept that this is the case.

The originator raised this question in the way he did so that he could better understand why the big picture is so different for the two vehicles. He is not questioning fuel consumption as such, but range. He is getting only 75% of his mates range, that's day to day significant. Not miniscule differences.

In your response you say "My opinion is that anyone going on about MPG........" but he has already said that it's not mpg he's interest in but range. Now of course they're related, but not the same.

Anyone that does fill-up down to nearly empty, to fill-up again will have a pretty good idea of RANGE as well as mpg. That surely is sufficently accurate for this guy's purpose?

The other thing to bear in mind is that this has now gone on for 10 pages, seem to be a bit emotive but hopefully has answered the initial question?

I forgot to put I get around 600 miles for a full tank although this drops by around 45 miles if I use supermarket fuel.

Now what Id like to know is that the people who can get above 550 miles from the original question, what modification have they done to the truck from the standard spec.

Maybe for those who may be interested to get more mileage form their truck might find the list usefull.

Ok, I can get 550+ mls on a tank with my wife's Disco Tdi 200 manual and these are the specs:
1. std size tyres
2. Std air filter but changed often
3. No viscous fan, no electric fan
4. Oil & filter changes every 5000mls

The car is driven gently, never over 65mph and we live in the country so don't get stuck in traffic. Pretty much everywhere we go is a bit of a run eg to do the shopping it's either 20 or 40 mile round trip depending on which shops. Very little stop/start stuff.

We tow a horse trailer probably once a week to get diy stuff.

On my Tdi 300 auto, it's used for the same sort of work and gives easy 500+ on a tank and is as follows:

1. Reg oil and filter changes
2. De-EGR'd
3. No viscous fan
4. Std tyres

Apart from an empty wallet, I normally get around the 500 mile mark, can fill up 35 miles west of Glasgow, (out Loch Lomond way), and get to Portsmouth, though i really need to fill up again when i get there. That's sitting at 75mph with cruise control on.

I have done Portsmouth to Carlisle, (350 miles), towing a 1.5 ton trailer sitting at 55 - 60mph and only used just over half a tank!!!

Sounds like you have a couple of good work horse

Been thinking about mine as I have 33" mud tyres it wont read the true reading.

It will read less than distance travelled !

So maybe I should use a sat nav to get the precise milage

Just come back from a trip to Northampton and then on to Brighton and back to North Wales. averaged 28mpg at 65mph , nursing it along. The last leg of the journey from Brighton to NW used up nearly a tankful, just been to Bangor and the light came on at 450 miles.

Anyone wanna buy it?

The reason for my question is that mine will only do 460.

We both work at the same place and we average on the motorway 55 to 65 mph

The difference in our car are

Mine has the big allisport inter cooler
and boosting just above 1 bar

his
Smaller intercooler
stainless exhaust sytem
boosting the same

His has been tried on bio and normal and no changes on the miles and performance

Thanks for your time
