what are these bits found in the sump?

Thanks and bugger it at the same time. I know I can do the caps without taking the head off but the valve stem seals?

Yes they can be done in situ. You need a tool to compress the valve spring, pop the collet's off and remove the valve spring seat and then pull the seals off.

I made a tool (I wanted it that day and only took 30mins to make) although you can get them, it's called a head on valve spring compressor. The valves will probably not drop, but it is easy enough to hold the stem up while you do the operation. Ideally lift the pistons to top dead centre to on the valves you are going to do - 1 and 4 go up and down together so get engine TDC do 1 and 4 then turn it over 180° (BDC) and do 2 and 3.

Yes, you can. i've done it many times on 2.25s and 2.5Ds and while you need a torque wrench to re-torque the head bolts removed you can do it. You're not taking all the head bolts out, so things will stay in place.

What head bolts is he going to remove?

Not if he gets good ones (not LR genuine interestingly) and keeps his clearances in check.

Get ones from Turner engineering, when they arrive try to cut the edge with a hacksaw (watch your fingers) it won't make a mark, that's how they should be. Get a LR genuine and it will cut like butter - not good.

Did you know turners use some britparts spares in their engines, not saying all britpart is bad just pointing out that just because a company has a supposed good rep that doesnt mean they are always spot on.
Have also heard of a few people having issues with reconned turners engines.
