I'm planning to build a trailer for a 1920's 22' yacht to take it to Montenegro via Oxford (for a re-build), but have a couple of questions.

Firstly, what's the maximum weight I can tow with a 3.5 Efi Range Rover on a braked trailer (I guess this has to include the weight of the trailer & the boat weights about 2 tons?

I plan to build the trailer using two series LR front axles, mainly to give steering at both ends when necessary, but also to give a simple mechanism to attach the axles using the springs to the trailer. Does anybody know the maximum weight a series front axle is designed to support?

Finally, does anybody know if the Rangie with this rig behind it can be legally towed on a standard UK driving license, or would I need to get it extended?

I think you'll find that yer rangie can tow 3500Kg.
Series front axles are fookin heavy! Are yer sure that's the best way?
They'll certainly be no problem with them taking the weight.

If you passed yer driving test before 1997, then you're OK to tow it. After that, then you'll need to take a trailer test - lots of info on that on the DVLA web site.
 
Most of the classics have a towing limit of 4,000kg if the trailer has independant brakes (i.e. not activated by pressure on the ball hook) and 3,500kg for normal braked (i.e. braking activated by the ball hook) trailer.
If you check the vin plate it will tell you the towing weights.
One important thing to note if you are building your own trailer is that you need to keep the nose weight on the ball hitch below 150kg (I think) but you do need a certain amount of weight on the hitch to brake properly.
BTW I fitted air assist springs to my classic for towing when my Boge unit packed up, really easy to fit and very effective.
