Fitted my new steering box today and found the splines are different.
The 2a has a straight splined shaft and the steering wheel is held on by
a pinch bolt but the new series 3 wheel is held on by a centre nut and
is a tapered fit.

Has anyone got an old series 3 steering wheel the don't want?

My 2a is presently stuck on the drive with no steering and no way of
moving it safely ;(

Regards,

Steve.

Quite possibly Steve !

It's currently attached to a SIII lightweight I'm converting, it'll be
getting a 90 steering wheel if everything goes to plan.
Although no specific photo's of it I'm sure I have one already up on the
build project thread started here >

Montego, are there any of these still on the road?
I may find one or two in a scrap yard though :)

I'd appreciate you letting me know Andy if you do decide to part with
said wheel, I don't have the time to trawl scrap yards ATM looking for
one.

Steve.

You could buy a new one. I got one from Paddocks i think, years ago
and cant remember it being that expensive. A bit smaller and nicer
than the original, but then a montego one probably will be too!

I always thought that 2A and 3 wheels were the same?. they have been
on both the ones ive played with.

Nice leather steering wheels from a Triumph 2500 fit too. Unfortunatly
the centre cap has 2500 embossed into it.

I suppose I could fit a 2.5 petrol lump into my IIa to match the
steering wheel....

Percy has the type Steve has taken off with the pinch bolt.

Later 2a's (about 1966 onwards IIRC) have the same steering wheel as
the S3. However the earlier ones dont. The early ones have a splines
with a pinch bold on the steering wheel, the later ones have a nut
under the centre cap. So the inner steering column is different as
well.

Series 3 steering wheels were available new at about £35, however
there don't seem to be any available at the moment, perhaps someone
needs to be re-manufacturing them.

Series IIa wheels are available recon at around £200.

For £40 or so you can get a Mountney 15" Steering wheel with an
adaptor boss for late 2a/3. (Try www.paddockspares.com)

A well as a pinch bolt the type of steering wheel (on my vehicle anyway)
has the extension on the steering wheel base to aid the rubber indicator
wheel to self cancel, realising this, a montego wheel wouldn't work for
me.

Does the later type (series 3) have the same indicator mechanism?

My old wheel is here:

These do look favourable as long as they are an easy straight fit.

I've just had a look at the Paddocks steering wheel details and they are
only about 30 odd quid, helpful to know as a last resort though.

Steve.

Series 1 to early 2a (suffix B) had the wire spoked, pinch bolt type wheel
90512322. This was replaced in later 2a (from suffix C) by the solid spoked
wheel NRC4346 which carried through to the end of Series 3, although the
indicator mechanism is different. The sleeve was similar but has different
numbers - but I suspect could be modified by drilling new holes for the
mount if necessary, and the Montego wheel may even have the holes for the
mounting screws!

I believe the indicator sleeve is easily interchanged but the type sold
by Paddocks if I understand it correctly requires an extension boss
thingy but not sure if this will work with the old indicator setup.

Don't now why I didn't look before but there's one on ebay from the
Land Rover Orphanage, at only a fiver, its got to be worth a look.

Steve.

Finally had time to check the steering wheel on the lightweight.
Its held on by a centre nut.
What type did you want as it's not clear.

Andy the type I want has a centre nut, (not the pinch-bolt type)

Please let me know what you want for the wheel, I presume it has the
centre horn cap thingy too?

Regards,

Steve.
