wandering disco

right my 200tdi disco wanders all over the road and is very unnerving
feels like the wheels and the steering are not connected
trying to fix the problem i have fitted new drag links and new wheel bearings as the drivers was worn but its still as bad
iv only had this car a few months but my 300tdi drives straight and true
any ideas what it coulb be?

track rod ends,does steering wheel sit off centre and as u get up to 60 itl weave n u av correct steering all time,also when mine breaks it feels like it diving under heavy breaking n normal breaking just gives a slight tug to the left

new track rod ends and had tracking done wheel sits fine does it under drive and braking

check ya steering box for leaks or could be just warn out

had new box recently as was leaking really bad
so i dont think its box,
could it be shocks/springs?
have looked this morning and they look bit old n rusty?
steering damper?

This could be a collection of wear and tear items across suspension and steering, but my first places to check would be:

1. Swivel bearings;

2. Panhard rod bushes.

swivels ok as they been done along with new cv joints and new prop ujs
rod bushes are a little cracked but i can find any movement in them
having laptop outside by car is handy lol

Could it be something on the rear suspension gone such as a frame ball joint. I know when mine started to go it gave a sort of disconnected feeling to the ride if you get my meaning.

I recently replaced all 4 shocks and the steering damper - they didnt actually feel that bad as the wear was all equal (if that makes sense??). However apart from it being a different machine comfort wise it does drive in a straight line now! If they look shot (mine did not) it may well be them that is allowing it to choose its own path instead of keeping it on the one you choose.

P.S. I changed the front first - this made things FAR worse steering wise! The back seemed totally disconnected once the front was under control. I was amazed how things at the back can affect the direction of travel1

think i will give the front shocks a try and gona do bushes too
iv fitted new rears today and the back seams more stable
and dont bounce as much too
ordered full set of polys this afternoon
not sure which shocks to go with
iv fitted some standard britpart ones on the back that i had in the garage
but i want something better than them
the ones that came off were very rusty pro comps
and the britpart cheapys are much better than them my 300 has de-carbons on it but i fancy something else if anything is any better or as good.
gona use the car for towing and a bit of light off roading

Hey, chek for corrosion/holes in the rear of your chassis.
Mine was wandering under power/braking and thought it was the steering mechs etc.....turned out the back end was rotten and causing the rear end to wobble around

checked chassis and its solid front to back.
so thats not the cause.

Give your trailing arms a good yank as they can cause terrible wandering, with the rear axle 'helping' with your steering. do you change direction when you let your foot off the throttle?

Check the steering shaft UJ's. It might also be worth jacking up the front and popping in a couple of axle stands so both wheels are off the ground, then you can check for play in the steering shaft, steering box, wheel bearings, swivel pins, drag link and track rod.

Some play is almost inevitable with so many joints but it shouldn't be so bad as to feel the wheels aren't connected to the steering or the front to the back.

Trailing arms might be suspect but also check the A frame bushes and ball joint. HTH

Did you prime the new steering damper before you fitted it that can cause steering play

Might sound stupid but what tires do you have on and are the walls worn. Ive replace everything whilst felt loads better still a little wonder. Put some New muds on my mate lent me. Solid as a rock. seems tire walls were worn. So new muds and modulars come next week. Worth a look see.

mine doesn't wander as such but it pulls to the left, as if the steering 'settles' towards the left. i've checked tyre pressures, changed the front pads recently (which were worn pretty evenly) but still have this issue. what would be the most likely cause and what else could it be?

Get your tracking done by a garage. It only costs 40 quid. That's what I would suspect

thats what i suspected as well but i went to a 4x4 garage today and he reckons that, with even tyre wear and pressures ok, brakes ok, its probably not tracking, (though he said it could be- and theres no harm in checking) it could be sticky steering joints or any number of little things. he did say though, that all discos have a tendency to wander to the left. he's not sure why, they just do.
