Hang on there seems to be some confusion here.Terra dog you can get extende breathers off ebay in kits for bout 30-40 quid these include axle and box breathers AND wading plugs. Worth the monet if yer play in puddles.If the oil goes creamy(any oil, gearbox injun, diffs) that means its emulsified, ie got water in and is working as it should.Get it replaced quick like but it aint the end of the world.MAke a habit of it and the wading kits would have paid for its self cos oils dont come cheap.For eample LANDROVER 300tdi ultimate wading kit .FULL BREATHER KIT on eBay (end time 23-Mar-10 18:01:58 GMT)
 
I dont think they are a waste a time the breather for the timing belt..

If you close the hole on the timing belt, the whole housing is completly sealed right?
When you go wading, the housing is hot and the water is cold, when the water hits the housing, it sucks air in... now...

if the whole housing is completly sealed, because there is a wading plug fitted there, where is air going to be sucked from? yep.. from the gasket, due to all the pressure, it will suck water in.

Now...

if you fit a wading plug with a breather routed up to the snorkel, the whole casing will be sealed, and when the cold water hits the casing and this has to breathe and suck air in....the air will be available to be sucked via the breather routed through the snorkel..

does it make sense?

I need to get one of these kits, are they user freindly and easy to fit? I'm a novice and don't have much mechanical knowledge of defender 200tdi? Does it have to be fitted to a snorkel? I have a safari snorkel.

P.S. I like playing in puddles.

No
the timing area does not need to "breathe" - plus it is not sealed - it is open to the sump which can "breathe" anyway, as can the bell housing.
The drain plug is jus tthat - a DRAIN plug - to allow oil to escape. how can it escape up to the snorkel, without filling the tube first?

just use a plug and remove it every 600 miles or earlier if yu want - as Landrover recomend!

I did it easy enough,mine came with instructions.If not ask on here. They go up the snorkel cos thats the depth of water the engine will be ok to.They dont have to go up the snorkel, mine didnt cos it was a v8 but was up to the top of the bulkhead with a u bend on it.
 
According to the Land Rover Manual which came with it when first bought the timing cover doe'snt need to be plugged off if it's a 200tdi model?
 
Thanks for that goon, i think i must get one of those and have ago at fitting it myself weather permitting, seems straight forward enough, then after that the oil in all those place that the breather pipe are fitted to will stay free from water forever, SORTED!!!!
 
mate, if you dont plug the timing cover, all the **** will go up inside the timing belt casing.

now think for a minute, what will happen if loads of muddy **** rubs between the belt and the pulleys?
 
can anyone tell me why there are holes at the bottom of the bell housing and timing cover??

(btw i know the answer i am wondering if everyone else does!)
EDIT: its got fook all to do with breathing!

Please understand i'm a total novice and hav'nt a clue what a timing cover is. I know what an axle is and think i would be able to find where to plug it after looking for half a day. I've just send a message to the seller on ebay to see whether the kit comes with instruction cuz it does'nt say in the description. It should do if goons came with em. Just have to wait and see then have a play when i get em.
