Alright Guys!

Just a quicky. Like a nob ive been wading through lotsa water/mud for a few months without the use of wading plugs. Didnt realise how important they were till my mate had to take his engine out in order to replace a £3 seal.

Anyway iv got em now and will be fitting when ever i get a bit extreme. My question is .. Is it worth me flushing the holes with clean water to get any mud/****e out that I may have picked up? Or is that gunna do more harm than good?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Don't what seal was damaged. The front one is primarily to protect the timing belt, the rear one the clutch.
I'm not sure flushing with clean water would make much difference.

OK. The reason i ask is that I read somewhere (probly on here) that the main issue with not using plugs was not water getting in but mud/****. Hence me thinking maybe i should flush it out before i start using them.

Another question guys....

Should both wading plugs be the same thread?

I have got them now. The one that goes into the belt housing seems to fit fine. But the one that goes into the Bell housing doesnt seem to bite on the thread...

Thinking maybe they should be different. Maybe the thread is a bit nackered from years of ****e going into it. So maybe I need to tap it out.

If they are supposed to be the same thread then does anyone know what size the thread is? Im guessing 1.5m14 but could do with knowing for sure, before i take a tap to it.

Thanks again in advance!!

Depends on the age, but most are different. I think yours are different and I think the bellhousing one is unaltered since 1948, so probably Whitworth!

Bell housing is either 1/4"BSPt or 3/8"BSPt. From memry, which isn't that good, the cambelt one on a 19J injun is UNF though wot diameter I can't remember. There is a hole next to the drain hole where the plug is kept.

**** now im confused!

The 2 plugs i got are m14-1.5

I have spoken to the shop where i got them and another shop and they say that the treads are the same for all wading plugs. But if you say they might be different then I dont wanna take the wrong size tap to it!!

Can anyone else shed any light? I cant be the only man who cant get his plug in the hole!!

Im sure your right Dave!

On closer inspection im convinced that the treads were different. However I have tapped it out anyway. Fits a treat now!

Thanks for the info guys!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but it may be humble pie time. I had a chance to look at the 90 parts book over the weekend, and found the change to the rear wading plug came far earlier than I thought.
I'm not convinced the parts book is totally accurate, but I haven't got the appropriate vehicles to look at.
