My TD4 always starts fine in low temps but is very lumpy and sluggish for the first few minutes and kicks out some smoke if I rev it hard.
Today I tested the glow plugs with my multimeter, I'm not great at understand resistance and what I should be getting.
With my meter set on resistance and I touch the prongs together I get 00.0 a dead short and 1.0 when not touching, my glow plugs are as follows:
1: 00.1
2: 00.1
3: 1.0
4 00.1

Am I correct in thinking that 3 of them need replacing, 1,2 & 4?
The reason I ask is if only one is working then I'm amazed its starts at all, or is only one (3) need replacing?

The glow plugs should have a resistance of about 1 ohm, which is also the limit of measurement of many meters.
If the resistance was 0 ohm's, the fuse would fail very quickly, as that is dead short.

Personally I'd replace all 4 with quality replacements.

My other questions, is how likely is it that they will come out without snapping?
I did spray WD40 on them all whilst I had it apart.

Tricky one that. I've often found that at least 1 won't come out. Penetrant only works if the threads are corroded or dirty.
If the tip is fouled by carbon, then lubrication can't get there to help. The most important thing is don't use too much force to get them out, as they break very easily, often less then 20 Nm of torque.
 
I would like to know which ones are good so I don't risk breaking them when trying to get them out, I'd like to replace the faulty ones first.
 
Something odd with your ohm.meter if it reads 1 when open circuit.
If 1 is open circuit then plug 3 is your problem. Try another meter first.
 
Look up on you tube movies tons of stuff on testing glows and getting them out. A TD 4 is no different to other engines in that regard
 
As above make sure engine is hot before removing then it helps, also use a good six sided socket with a decent ratchet, extended one if possible to give you more leverage, and take it slow when undoing, bit at a time, even tighten back up a little if necessary to help any stuck corrosion.

Use a 55 Watt headlamp bulb as a test light, grounding the light through the terminal on the glow plug. If the light lights, then there's nothing wrong with that plug.
 
Done, it came straight out.
I let the engine idle for 10 mins before getting started.
Slightly concerned about the amount of blue smoke that came out when I went for a test drive, it stopped after a few miles so need to let it cool down and go out again, can't imagine why that's started,

Slightly concerned about the amount of blue smoke that came out when I went for a test drive, it stopped after a few miles so need to let it cool down and go out again, can't imagine why that's started,
