Hi all.

Sorry for not putting this in 'anything goes'. I thought better than getting waffle back as answers.

Do not fear I am not getting rid of my Defender. However. My old man always borrows my car over the winter as his is awful as rear wheel drive. He's looking to get a new car and as I always suggest one I have been handed the task. He normally has a performance rear wheel drive car but as it is always going wrong and stupidly expensive to fix its time to have a rethink. At the same time it's been agreed its a good idea to get 4WD (to give me a break too!). Something smaller than a big exec saloon is wanted too.

I have come up with the R32 as it has the poke to get away at the lights to avoid the 3 to 2 lane jostle and the 4WD to cope better in a light dusting of snow. Parts will also be everywhere as everyone seems to have a Golf.

Does anyone have and experience if the MK5 golf/R32? Have been stung at the dealers with the last car so really want to know of major issues. Or can anyone suggest an alternative?

I know I could have asked on a VW forum but this place feels like home...😁

Thanks.

friend of mine had 1, ot rid when the scirocco R came out.

Ill ask if there is anything to look out for. im sure your man above will be able to help also.

Are you definitely going with an R32? what about an a4 Quattro etc etc? im about to buy an a4 nd i considered the Quattro for a while.

Want something with serious poke. Sub 6.5 secs and looking second hand spending no more than 14k.

QTR - What did you think of them? Did they often go wrong. The exhaust note is great but he's in his early 60's... Did it ever become intrusive? Ideally for the money I want an 08 with sub 50k on the clock.

Any engine problems ever? Is the build quality good? Going to try to see a couple soon.

Anything you can give is appreciated.

Thanks.

WRX STI? 09 plate for under £14000 with sub 30k on the clock and good performance figures.

It's a bit too racey. He is also insistent on an automatic. He has an 03 XJR at the moment and likes its understated performance.

The mk5 r32 is a fantastic car . The build quality is very very good . "But" dont expect amazing performance out of it . It is a heavy car with a heavy v6 in the front plus 4x4 so it "will" understeer when pushed around tight corners . Also, suspension is a bit soft but then again it makes it comfty . No faults on mine . Engine and dsg are brilliant . I recommend it big time . Exhaust note is very nice an whilst cruising it is very quiet and wont bother you ..... If stock

Also do not think that a 4x4 car will always offer better grip in the snow, its all down to tyres. My old scooby had wide fast road tyres, comes snow and ice all 4 wheels would lose grip and I would simply fall down the camber of the road, was a right pain in the arse

Thanks guys. The R32 will be quick enough. Not looking for blistering. Just a good bit of poke.

Cheers.

what about the octavia vrs? built on the golf platform and the police use them extensively round here as high speed pursuit and unmarked cars so they cant be all bad. and half the price of the vw; you get a lot more car for your money anyhow. not sure if they made an AWD vrs or not. personally I'd have one over a golf any day.

anyone else think its funny how hes looking for n R32 for his dad who is over 60?

Im not knocking you or your old man here, i just have this image of my dad getting an R32 and its bloody hilarious. my mom would have a kitten for starters. :D

Fair play though and good luck. :)

Haha. I have always picked his cars for him. He wants 4WD. 5 doors and practical. I could only really come to the conclusion of that! Makes a great sound too 😁.

Plus. Having had an XJR it's a downgrade in performance if anything. With 4WD it's even safer! 😃

Audi S3 is a thought but the new ones in a 5 door are too much pony for what we're wanting to spend. I told him about a 4WD golf with less poke but he's told me to stop being such a 'pussy' 😳.

He definitely doesn't get it from me!

Audi S4 or RS4
Buy the later cars with the 4.2 v8 as its a better engine
Or volvo V70r awd 300bhp and 4wd
That's If 4wd is a must if not I'd buy a BMW and a second set of winter wheels and tyres
I've had bmw's for 20 years as well as other cars and in that time the only car I've got stuck in was a Nissan micra (2 foot deep snow drift had to dig it out)
We don't get that much snow

I'd also go for a BMW and a set of winter tyres.

I find 4WD can give unpredictable handling sometimes, at least RWD coupled with a decent chassis gives you a decent amount of feel so you can control it properly.
