viscous fan removal

Is there any way to remove the vsicous fan without a pulley locking tool. Every time I turn the nut it just turns the pulley, and the only locking tools I can find are £40 plus - is there anything else I can use to lock the pulley??

You need a highly specialised tool known as a precision impact adjusting device. Available in either right or left handed types. They are used to remove the fan as follows;

Put 36mm spanner on nut
Sharply whack spanner with above special tool
whack again if it doesnt free up first time

Just done my TD5 its a standard thread so undo anti clock, looking at front of the engine.

Er yes some people do call them that I believe!!!!!

But seriously no need to lock the pulley, just jar it free with a solid whack!

Precision impact adjusting device worked a treat - now onto the fused solid drain plug and all the other lovely parts to drain the system and change the thermostat!!

If you haven't already done it, removing the EGR valve at the same time makes a lot of sense.
