VIN restamping

Hi all. My chassis VIN is slightly corroded though still legible. I want to get it restamped. What is the legal route for this in the UK? Do I need to contact the DVLA? I've had a look online and haven't come across a DVLA page or .gov page explicitly for restamping a slightly corroded VIN number.

Whats you concern about it wearing off ?. There is still a vin number inside the windscreen.

Ours is loooong gone, and when we fitted a new chassis to our eldest son's Defender CSW after it was a CatC write-off, they only checked the chassis plate, not the new chassis.

Truth be told the reason is quite longwinded...here it goes...

I bought an LHD disco 2 on UK plates in May this year. Took it to Slovakia where I want to get it registered as I spend around 8months a year in Slovakia and 4 in england...by EU rules you have to register car in country if you are there for 6months or more. Also my UK insurance only allows me to have car abroad for max 90days a year.

Took car to equivalent of MOT and 'control of originality' (basically a check whether car isn't stolen) and it didn't pass because VIN was not perfectly visible... it is certainly visible, but apparently not visible enough (the joys of ex-socialist state beauraucracy still in full existence). Basically was advised to request for a new VIN through the ministry of transport. Sent off form and money...two weeks and still no reply...sent email, no reply, phoned, no-one picked up the phone (again...the joys of ex-socialist state beauraucracy and lazy ministerial staff).

So to avoid all of this beauraucracy I'm just thinking of driving back to UK, having it restamped and taking it to another MOT place...and giving the guy who does the check a crisp 20EUR note so he lets it pass...yes, thats still how it works in every single ex-socialist state.

p.s. the reason why there are so many Poles, Slovaks and Czechs in the UK is because they earn a lot more and because the UK has a bloody good system and is a brilliant place to live....and they're fed up of this beauracracy back at home!

Buy a set of punches and do it yourself.

just restamp it under original number,that way it will show you havent tried to change the number, its only illegal,to try and pass something off as isnt

Gould get a replacement Land Rover Chassis and VIN Plates - Chassis ID & VIN Plates

The same general rules apply in France, in that during the Contrôle Technique (MOT to you) the tester has to identify and check the chassis stamp to ensure it matches with the VIN plate and documentation.

I believe that this applies to vehicles with a separate, therefore replaceable, chassis.

On a number of LR's that I've had through my hands they have NO chassis stamp at all, so I have to pay to have it done again. I use a local body shop to do it, it costs 30 euros and then flies through the CT.

Thanks for all your help guys! I will wait a few more weeks and see if I get a response from the ministry of transport. If not I will just get the same number restamped.

Thinking about it though, if I do get a new VIN allocated on the basis that the previous one is not visible....that means I have a legal document allowing me to stamp this VIN on ANY silver disco 2 (since the original number is not visible)... so if I write mine off or something I can just get a new one and stamp the allocated VIN number on rather than having to worry about all the paperwork...so basically something thats designed to prevent car fraud makes it even easier...bit stupid isn't it?

vin is displayed in engine bay and dash as well as chassis(seen through front of screen) ,they can be all home stamped as long as they all match and belong to that vehicle , though 3 home stamped numbers would look suspicious , investigation of vehicle, would prove numbers correct,restamping one number is no great issue

I had to remake my vin plate and re stamp the chassis on my old Bedford tk lorry many years ago after some repair work and I took it to the vosa testing station where they checked it and gave me paperwork saying it was all legal .so prob still the way to go . Do a search for vosa testing station near you and ring them see what they say
