Hi guys need some help,

planning to rebuild/replace my braking system and was thinking of converting to vented brake discs, is it as simple as replacing the calipers, brake discs and pads with the vented type and bob your uncle, or is it more involved, my disco is one of the last series 1 300 tdi's and is an auto with ABS, any info much appreciated,

cheers neil

I know it sounds like overkill but I tow a lot and also I like to drive it a bit quick. It's a personal thing always like my cars to stop on a sixpence, I fitted grooved and drilled brakes and fast road pads when i got it but i've always felt they could be better, as do get a bit of heat fade and subsequent glazing with this set up.

could do but going to replace the calipers anyways so may as well upgrade if I can, vented calipers are cheaper than solid ones anyway.

As you say that's all that's involve although pads won't be of the "vented type" they are standard, vented discs and calipers have a LR part number and are shown in the disco parts book.

I use standard vented discs and calipers from a 110 and pads to match . The calipers and pads are bigger than the disco ones yet fit perfectly and greatly improved my braking on a Disco 1998 300 tdi ES Auto with ABS. It is an easy job , the messy bit was repacking the bearings with grease and the hardest bit was unbolting the discs from the hubs which I needed my very considerate wife to hold the hubs while I held the breaker bar . I have since bought air tools !!!! Regards Jonathan

so if i wanted i could put the discs calipers and pads of a defender 110 on my disco and improve the braking?

mrnice. Yes that is exactly what I have done on the front , the rear were left the same , you just have to make sure you get the ones to match your pipe work ie your car is a little older than mine but should be the same as mine a single pipe not two.( you can get both types of caliper ) Regards Jonathan

110 brakes sounds like a plan mate, cheers.
As for removing disks from hubs my trick to do it with air tools or without is to re-attach the hubs to the wheel once i've removed them then you can put your weight on the wheel to hold it and the hub in place as you remove the disc bolts with the bar or an air gun.

I did the conversion a few years ago the part numbers at that time were LH Caliper STC1267 ,RH Caliper STC1266 , Vented discs FTC902 , Caliper Bolts FTC 3375 , Fitting kit , STC 8575 , Pads SFP000260M . Please double check as part numbers change .Regards Jonathan

How much did it set you back for the parts?

Are the callipers and disks much bigger than what's on now? Just thinking how much cost effective it is?

Cheers

I can not remember exactly I got the parts from my local specialist several years ago . I think it was about £ 200 ish . They are all widley available check the internet and the magazines . The discs are the same size but vented and the calipers bigger and more importantly the pads are approx 20 % more surface area in contact . I can not remember and I have thrown the old stuff away. I remember at the time looking at the EBC stuff and it was a lot cheaper when comparing like for like . Regards Jonathan

Funnily enough, i've got the same thread on another forum!

Parts required for the 110 conversion are...

OS Caliper - SEB500470
NS Caliper - SEB500460
Vented Discs - LR017952
Caliper Bolts - SYP500090
Fitting Kit - STC8575
Pads - SFP000260

If you use britpart calipers, the jobs can be done for around £200!

Doing it at the weekend, i've driven one with the conversion, and yes... it is worth it!

the 110 calipers are 4 pot, so not just increased pad size, but also increased grip!
