ratty

I'm not special I'm limited edition
I have just topped up my 1997 defender 300tdi's tank courtesy of my local lidls (56p a litre veg oil). It's my first time cos I have always been a bit wary, but after reading everyone else's experiences I thought I may as well give it a go. Early signs are good. I am running approx 75/25 diesel to veg oil at the mo. Just thought I would find out how many miles/ how often you guys change your fuel filters. Due to my job I only use my landy for a couple of days every other week so don't want to find it seperating in the tank or gunking up the filter when left standing.

first filter change after first use is 500-1000 mile's but as i was told carry a filter with you just in case..

after that then a annual change as normal should be ok, as i say thats what i was told..

mine as just hit the 900 mile marker so not done the change yet.

done exactly the same last week ratty , sept mine was 73p from sainsburys , seems to be running fine , starts ok , no smoke , woman in a fiesta next to me gave me a funny look when she saw me pouring it in , in the petrol station , gave it a blast up the M11 on sun , 160 miles , smells nice anorl

only reason for an early filter change is the cleaning properties of the veg oil cleans all the tank and fuel lines out of all the crap that is lurkin in them. Run it for a few hundred miles and change the filter then go back onto normal filter interval (have done that wiv my discos for the last 3 years no probs)

Is that cos you EXPECT more ****e in the first one or more to see how much there actually IS?

veg oil will strip all the crud out your fuel lines etc and clean em all, so a filter change will prob be needed after a few hundred miles.

carry a spare filter at first ready for when it gets sluggish

I did my last filter change 5000 miles ago (almost twelve months...no probs still and have been running anything from 50/50 in the real cold snap, to 80 oil / 20 diesel in the normal cold weather and up to 100% during the few hot days we had last year.

Cheers Steve

you say it cleans everything out as regards tank and lines, what about injectors?? i ran a bit of diesel red ex or lucas injector cleaner every few k.

I guess you'd hope by the time it got past the filter all the **** would be out of it, and if not the filter woudl get rid of it???

Dunno where all this about veg oil cleaning your plumbing out comes from. Surely diesel with additives in it to do just that will keep yer pipes clean but there ain't no such chemicals in svo?? I just changed my filter after about 3000 miles on svo, varying from almost 100% to 50/50 and there was very little crap in there. Perhaps someone should try bunging a new filter on BEFORE running veg oil then change it again after a bit just to see what actually is happening as a result of the veg oil.

I use redex pretty regular too so it should be interesting to see what the filter is like when it comes out.

mine was ****ty like, but at the time i took on water as some **** knicked me petrol cap or i left it at the pump, who knows, she still ran though, ill do mine this week now i havnt took on water so ill get a pic as its been about a year since now.

This filter was only a couple of months or so old before ah used the veggie oil. Should've changed it before ah went a tour up north ah suppose as did quite a few miles and never took a spare!!! But this is what it looked like when ah got back home..

I ran a 80/20 mix oil/deeezil for ages with NO ill effects, but shyed away when there was an article in the news about some bloke getting done by those luverly chaps in the chancellors cash collection brigade cos the certain supermarket who smack their back pockets . . shopped him cos he bought a trolly load in one go

Might be worth spreading ya buying haunts around a bit, or buying a sack of spuds at the same time and tell em your having a 'chip party'
