I know we are all paranoid about our VCU, and I am sometimes concerned that the braking effect on full lock is too much. But how much is too much? Could we come up with a test for this? I am thinking of something like finding an empty car park and driving at 5mph (or whatever) on full lock then dipping the clutch and seeing how many seconds it takes to come to a halt? Or would this itself be a damaging test as it deliberately winds up the transmission?

And everyone talks about tyre castellation but I am still not really sure what this means. I gather it is uneven tread block wear, but what exactly should I look for. Is it alternate blocks on the inner/outer shoulder having different heights. Anyone have a good description or a photo? And can anyone explain how this condition develops?

Last night when I came home from a 140 km highway drive (with cruise control at 124 kmphs/2.600 rpms) I immediately checked and felt the VCU, it was warm, so as far as I understand the VCU is still ok for me. (I hope).

Unless it's sticking and burning up Willo...Me dif was sooo hot before it did a John Hurt and spat its innards out, you cudda fried an egg on it....;)

No more burning around these days overhere, that was more common in the middle ages ???:D :D Thanks for your sympathy MHM.;) ;) When I touched the VCU after that trip it was just lukewarm.

Shud be ok then Willo, next route is the tippex test. Gonna do mine if I wasn't scared of what I might find..

Gon e through the Tippex scenario already, first the 'correct' way by putting a mark on both ends of the VCU (with no moving results...:D :D :D ) and afterwards the 'other' way with a mark on one part of the VCU and a mark on the outgoing transmission with changed positions after a tour, thus it looks mine is still ok. (Not shouting for a faulty one though...);)
