Had a Triumph Herald which exhibited similar symptoms for a while,
would start and run ok for a few miles, then would start to splutter
and die. Leave for a while, it would then start and run fine again for
a few miles.
Turned out to be a restriction in the fuel line, not allowing enough
juice through at full throttle, but would let fuel trickle through
with engine off to fill up fuel lines etc.
Just food for thought.
