Hello! I am new to the Discovery game having just purchased a 1999 TD5 in wonderous gold.
However I have suddenly happened upon a very irritating problem. The car will open on the key then I pop the key in the ignition, give it a twist, the lights come on and then I try and start it.

Nothing

Then the damn thing wont do anything, no lights on key, no ignition, no lock unlock and now the alarm is going off and it will not stop.

This happened once without the alarm issue and closing the door, locking and unlocking started it. This time it will not let me lock and unlock. The lights coming on the key when buttons are pressed and sometimes the car makes an extra bleep when I press the button.

Please advise how I can resolve this and if anyone knows an easy way to get the alarm to stop whining (somewhere easy to disconnect it) it would be appreciated. My popularity on my tiny terraced street dropped when I started parking the beast on the road and its dropping further now that I will potentially keep everyone awake tonight

Update
I disconnected the battery and the sound continues (I know I know but I was hopefull) and when reconnecting it the thing is oddly twice as loud. Explain that!
Anyway I pulled the fuse that had an icon resembling a key and replaced it. The key then worked again and noises ceased and I was able to drive back to work. However I cannot say that this is what resolved it. I am guessing this is not a common problem? I hate cars I always get crap ones and this is supposed to help me become self employed again. Am I lining up for another life fail?

I dont mind it not starting currently.....well I do I just want it to shut the f@*# up. It is blissfully silent right now parked outside work but I live in fear of it.

It seems yours is equipped with BBUS(battery backed up sounder) too... the only way to make it silent is to unplug the BBUS and the horns untill u fix things

the BBUS will sound for 30 secs and shut up then
The BBUS is located behind the rear quarter trim panel on the right hand side of the vehicle and is utilised as an additional alarm warning device. It has a self contained power source allowing it to operate when the vehicle battery is disconnected.

That sounds exactly right. Pondering if this is the interference issue. Its happened twice in odd places. I decided to run off the key instead of using the blipper and the alarm goes off and I have to disarm with the fob. Is there any way of bypassing it entirely?

I think u can disarm the alarm/immobiliser(or at least parts of it) by connecting it to a dealer's tester... i dont know other way for that. Make sure u dont have a fly or some bug trapped in the car cos it might trigger the volumetric alarm... or if it's very windy outside and the seals are not the best(or the windows not fully closed) an air flow within the cabin could move something which is hanging around there.

Have you tried this? Shut all doors/ bonnet ect. Lock with fob, unlock with key, lock with fob, unlock with fob. Worked for me.

Once its gone it is completely unresponsive to all inputs via key and fob sadly. I am thinking it might be the interference thing but I am not sure. Its a little saddening as I broke the bank to purchase the thing with a little money set aside for maintenance. Not really prepared for diagnostics and all that jazz

edit/Note - If I lock it on the key it sets the alarm but if I unlock it with the key it does not disarm it and I am treated to a fanfare of dismay from the vehicle. I have thus far been able to instantly disarm with key fob however

The fob works except when this happens. Yes red lights on it illuminate. I keep hearing about EKA codes? What on earth are these

So, just to be clear, if you were to commence with your car locked up and the alarm not sounding and the red alarm led on the dashboard is flashing slowly;

1. Can you use the remote-locking button on your car, to unlock it - yes or no? Please just a yes or no.

2. Does the red led on the dash change it's speed of flashing when you use the remote-locking button - yes or no?

3. Are there any signs of the rear sunroof leaking - yes or no?

I can walk you through a series of tests to diagnose the problem but I need for you to respond clearly to my questions.

awaiting your response

Hi,
1-Yes
2-Yes
3-No

Just to add-Unlocks on button, key in ignition and on turn I get all my lights and the glow plugs go out, final turn and all lights disappear and no ignition. At this point the Key Fob no longer works to lock or unlock and I think the key would only unlock the single door. No apparent central locking activity.
I note that when it did come back on everything had reset such as the climate control, clock and stereo

Ok That's very helpful. That means the fob is communicating with the receiver in the roof just in front of the rear sunroof.

1. When you get to your no 3. and attempt to start the engine, is there any noise at all? Any attempt from the starter motor, any click noises?.

2. How old is the battery? When was it last recharged? Have you checked/cleaned the terminals on the battery? Before doing anything else I would be taking the battery out of the vehicle (assuming you have the radio code?) and putting it on charge for at least 24hrs.

Not sure of the age of the battery and I have had both terminals off and there is no corrosion here. Might be very old though.
When it failed to start there was I guess an attempt at starter but this would be milisecond brief.
It has been running fine since this happened although I live in fear of it cutting out again. Even this morning when I had to move the car for the Bin men it fired like a pro. I will pop the battery off tonight though and give it a thorough charge

Further to this .. I'd also check that the battery has liquid in it. Mine is a 'maintenance free' battery ... had to take the stickers off to see the electrolyte level very low when it stopped starting easily on cold mornings. Charged it fully, after re-filling, with a reconditioning charger and it now starts without waiting for the Glow Plugs!

I believe that the Back-Up alarm battery needs to also be in good condition, a decently long motorway drive with little load at steady pace, if the car battery and alternator are functioning correctly, normally sorts this out!
