Just an update regarding my previous thread. Been told that p38 has been plugged into 5 different machines including a rep from Delphi who was trying to sell them a new machine was asked to plug it in and see wot he can do but still no joy it won't communicate with any of them

Need something like a Nanocom to talk to a P38, although decent garage diagnostics ought to be able to talk to the engine ECU. The ODB socket does get corroded sometimes. Check it for green and clean up as necessary! There is a fuse for it somewhere too, I think. Would have to have a look in RAVE.

Finally got an answer on car they can read every system on her apart from the engine systems so I don't no if ECU is dead or its out of sync. Sounds a lot like garage couldn't be arsed I even sent an ECU when they picked her up an they didn't do anything with it so don't no if I should stick her on fleabay or find another garage

If car starts it's not out of sync.

Definitely thinking that. I'll try another garage starting to get stressed now if I had hair id pull it out. Many thanks for all the great advice

You need someone who knows what they are doing to come and read it with a Nanocom. That way if the ECU is duff you can fit your new one and sync it. Many of the garage diags are just not good enough to work on these with. Even the expensive ones.

The P38 diesel ECU's aren't technically OBD compliant - which is why none of their generic scanners are able to communicate with it. Only the Land Rover diagnostics - like Nanocom, Hawkeye, Testbook, and from what I gather some more specific Bosch diagnostics equipment will connect to the ECU properly.

That being said, the connector(s) behind the kick panel in the drivers footwell are known to corrode and at that connector is the link for the OBD line between the fascia where the OBD socket is and the body loom which takes it to the engine ECU. One of the wires is a Pink with Red tracer, and the other is a Light Green, again with a Red tracer.

The diesel ECU uses both of these diagnostic lines, so if one of them is corroded or broken then you won't get communication either. They then go through another connector under the coolant tank (and change colour) but the coolant tank connector is pretty well protected.

If that still proves no joy with other diagnostic systems, and it cranks but won't fire, then it does sound like a sync problem. I have syncmate units that I hire out to other owners - as they are 'plug and plug' and unfortunately I wouldn't ship my Nanocom out to someone either (I use it all the time when I'm at home for one!). I get home from work at the end of the month, so if it's not sorted by then, and are interested in a Syncmate hire for the diesel vehicle, then drop me a PM. I usually list them on eBay for buyer/seller protection but don't have any listed up at the moment as I'm away.

Well in a last ditch attempt I sent it to auto electrician. They fitted spare ECU and coded it to bcm and bled fuel system still no joy it tries to start but wont. They told me the send it to diesel specialist to check fip so it's going on eBay I've had enuff going back to a discovery. Thanks all for advice

Security code from ECM must be read then entered and written to the BECM. If the wrong type EDC (Early instead of late or late instead of early) is set in the BECM it won't start. Even if it is synced.
