Ok,so we're only 30 miles into my/our new life with Leroy and having nothing to compare to I'm bound to have some first impressions. The problem is are these impressions what I should be expecting?.So it's not the smoothest ride I've ever had and there is definitely a soft whining coming from the rear.Don't get me wrong and I certainly don't want to upset the purists,I wasn't expecting air cushioned suspension but my gut feeling is that the tyres could be partly to blame.I'm not planning on crusading across Castlemorton common just yet so I don't particularly need a set of tyres that would help me do that. The rears are and I quote:Forceum ATZ 235/70 R16 109s xl and the fronts are, again I quote:
Goodyear Wrangler AT/R 235/70 R16 105T.....Sorry if I'm covering old ground but the other threads that came up didn't have anything for the Discovery and the sticky was for...well BIG tyres. So,in short, any thoughts for a tyre that will aid a smoother ride.? (I will be keeping a spare set for I am sure temptation will lead me astray at some point ;))
Many thanks.

How long are you planing to keep it, mile wise? type of driving highway, country roads etc? give some info so we can help you. Help us help you

Copper AT'S are the best come with a 60,000 mile warranty
Go to there site and look at the specs for rain, ice, snow, mud and hard roads, then do the same to BFG, BFG can not hold a candle to copper, and copper owns Avon

Cooper not copper :p

TBH for road you cant beat scorpions IMO, once of the nicest road tyres around and if you're not into heavy mud they're great, excellent in snow too!

Yep,your right, more info.....I'm hoping to keep Leroy indefinitely,he's only done 104k and hopefully won't take to much to make really special.Usage wise,he will be our everyday workhorse includin the taxi runs for the two teenagers and all the associated school runs etc.Avon..yay...is a big part of our life,so many journeys to and from reps locations as well as a 7 hour stint every 3 weeks...and every now and then I might just sneak out and drive.

Then look real hard at cooper they have great tyres. Craddocks seems like they have good prices. But go to Cooper site and look at there full line But there at's are hard to beat remember 60,000 mile warranty . I do not think anyone else comes that close, they use some Kevlar belting

Oh my word....:eek:eek: How many tyres??..Thank you for all the excellent advice..There are loads of AT'S (Yes,I've only just realised what it stood for...duh.)..Coopers have both the tyres that are already on,so that can narrow it down some. Also the Scorpion STR seems tasty...

I've run Discos with Scorpions STR before but to be honest the best overall compromise I've experienced has been General Grabber AR².

They gave great, reassuring grip in all conditions, were quiet and comfy and lasted nigh on forever. They are about £20 per hoop cheaper than BF Goodrich equivalent and about the same as Cooper STT

Have a look here for comparisons:

Thanks for the link.I've just had a quick look and bookmarked.I now have at least a few options to consider.I've also saved a search on E-bay for wheels/tyres and knowing which tyres are considered better than others through personal experience is a huge bonus. Many thanks.

Its all individual preference really, on my last discovery i had Michelin latitude all round, lasted ages, the discovery i have now had the old Michelin tyres that came off the production line with you cannot get them now, so i had to change the 2 front, don't do a lot of miles, goes off road when i have too, but only as a car really, got 2 General Grabber HTS 255/65 R16 H (109) off black circles, fitted at a garage near me, balanced etc, whilst car was there had it all tracked as i didn't know it history, so no uneven tyre wear, the way winter has been, car went everywhere in the snow it had to, and we had a fair bit of later, so had to use car for work for 3 days, pulled ifor tipper in snow with full load no problem, after all its a 4x4 not a saloon car, so you cannot really have best of both worlds! but i am impressed with general tyres, but after admit its got goodride on rear, cheap ones i think, they seem ok, but will replace with general in future, also i have been buying cheap alloys as they come up on ebay, got 2 new alloys plus 2 Michelin tyres unused, been spare wheels, £90.00 upto now spent!

Your right with the personal preference but this thread has given me a lot of bonus info from people like yourself who have tried different tyres etc.Up until now I have just bought tyres with no real thought apart from the price. Now I have a better understanding of at least what type of tyres to be looking for.A spare set of alloys with tyres off E-bay sounds like a plan also.I have a number of them on the 'watchlist' with tyres that have been mentioned on here.First though I think I'm replacing melted headlamp connectors.Yay.

On my mums old one that never saw off road work, they fitted BFGMacadam as they had done to the 200 previous.

When the 200 went I put the tyres on my Jeep Cherokee, and on the road they were fantastic, but they were pretty much a road tyre even thou I did take my Cherokee to Driffeild Land Rover show and have a crack at there off road course.

I run Hankook Ventus on my TD5 but as there low profile the ride quality is compromised to say the least.

But if I wasn't looking at off road then I would happily get BFG Macadam (or there equivalents)
