Driving with the wrong tyres. Does that mean I got the wrong discs?

Hi,

I just realised I've been driving with the wrong type of tyres ever since I bought the vehicle. It says 205/80 on the tyre.

I'm looking for a replacement, and the vendors suggest 235(255)/65(70)

I understand that my tyres are narrower than normal? Two questions:

1. Does that now mean that my discs are wrong? The marking on the alloy rim says: RTC9976 7.1x16x33.0AH2 for what it's worth.

2. What should I pick from the 235(255)/65(70) combination? Priority for this particular vehicle is to be as economical for day-to-day use as it has always been :)

1st one is which Discovery do you have?

The Td5's have wider tyres but the usual default for 200 and 300 TDi's is 235.70R16's.

So if Td5 I would fit the 255's but a 300 or 200 then 235.70's.

205.80.R16 was a standard size with the 200Tdi's with the 235's an option, but that was changed quite early on with 235 becomming the standard

I believe that the disco was also supplied with 205's fitted, as for the discs etc they are more than likely correct as the effort to fit incorrect discs etc is greater than any cost saving gained by using them.
I would stick to the standard 235/60 size as the choice of tyres is greater, as for which tyres the best thing is to search the forum.
good luck

205 /70/16 and 235/75/16 are standard sizes for the disco 1 if memory serves

How to confuse people in one easy lesson!

205R16 and 235.70R16 are the standard sizes as stated in my 1st post on this subject.

205's are actually 205.80R16's but as "80" is the default figure for the profile its not quoted in the size list.

The middle figure "70" "65" etc is a percentage of the width.

So a "70" profile will be 70% of the (in the case of LR) 235 width.

Thank you everyone for the tips! It' a 1996 TDi 300

@gizgrey, I mean my flippin' alloys :D

The thing is that my pal has got visibly wider tyres on his Disco and I don't really get how would it be possible to fit these on the alloys that just had narrow tyres mounted.

dont really matter which you fit... 205 or 235 as long as all the tyres on the vehicle are all the same size. id be inclined to try a different tyre supplier , the one been trying to sell you tyres obviously hasnt explained things clearly to you..
both my h reg 200tdi and my fathers p reg 300tdi are on 205s.
the 205 and 235s fit on the same 7inch wide wheels even though the tread width is different... youve got flexible sidewalls between the tread and the metal rim
