Hello all,
With thanks to ratty & davec for their advice I am now the proud owner of a new set of alloys. Now I need to know what to put on them - what sizes can I go to without effecting wheel lock? I,ve been offered plenty of all terrain 265/75 x 16 and 235/70 x 16. Anybody had good experiences with particular suppliers or manufacturers? All advice gratefully received!

I'll be doing about 50/50 road and trail. Intend to use the landy as a weekend camper - got dogs so like to drive out into the wilds to get away from folks. So something that can handle light off road but nothing extreme. If I ever want a play day I'll stick the old wheels with mud tyres back on.

Can't fault BFG mud terrain. They're not too aggressive, not too noisy on the road and a bit grippier than all terrains off road. Yes they're expensive but if you keep em when you change vehicles they do actually last forever.

Insa turbo do a copy of both the mud and all terrain BF goodrich tyres. They are a lot cheaper but I don't know how they stand up to wear. I would never have BFG all terrains again cos mine all went out of true and it didn't matter how many times I got em ballanced they still caused steering vibrations.

My bfg muds have done about 50 thousand miles and still got about 10mm tread left. There'll come a point where they're no good off road but will still be legal on the road for a good while. Never had any problems with em at all regarding balance or owt like that.

apparently it's only the AT's that suffer from it and not the MT's.

265/75r16 BFG MT , great for mileage, run them slightly hard and will cut down tyre noise which wont be that noticeable in a tdi , as I dont notice mine until above 65ish and thats a V8 csw so quite quiet . :)

235/85 16 AT2's on wolf rims, had them on my 109 and now my 110, been in mud, sand, snow, ice, and the English "Summer", grip is very good, handling and feel seems to be solid.

about 9mm left after 11k miles.
