I have 2002 td5 disco. How much should the wastegate move and when? Mine is quite hard to move with a pair of mole grips on the bar, impossible to move by hand. When I rev it hard, it moves about 5mm momentarily. Im wondering if its effecting my performance?

Snelly, that is about right. Just went and checked mine (10P). Mole grips move it about 5mm or so; and I'd say it's running great.

Is there an issue you're trying to troubleshoot?

Probably nothing, took it to be remapped and we ended up with quite an aggressive map to make it "go". Bloke mentioned it felt a bit flat down low in rev range. Turbo must be working though because it flys now with the hammer down.

check the reading from your MAF sensor on a diagnostic pooter and also clean yer MAP sensor.

Mine wasn't moving. So we put a breaker bar on the butterfly bit of the bar and knocked it by hand until it freed up. I found it very hard to move with mole grips. If your lucky you can do it like that. If not you'll have to take the heat shield off and free it off. You'll need some copper grease to lubricate it. Mine now moves about 10-12 mm from memory.

I was wondering.. How does the defender TD5 sense overboost (MAP sensor in intake?), and when/how does the wastegate kick in. I know the Discos have a sensor attached to a pressure line, but the deefer's line goes to the metal hose between the turbo and intercooler.

Does it get to a point that creates a vacuum, in turn pulling the wastegate open?

Im going to clean maf and aap today. Ive done map already when i removed egr. Im probably just being picky, the truck does shift when i boot it and its easy to forget its one heavy bit of metal. I would like to find someone nearby with a diagnostic puter thingy just to see if everythings in order. Anyone near me, near hull?

Ive cleaned the maf and aap. I noticed the elbow pipe between the turbo and solid bit of pipe leading to the intercooler looks ropey. I undid one of the jub clips and noticed it looks like the layers are splitting? Could this be a problem?
