I have a Tomtom one which I reckon is a great piece of kit. I cant be bothered taking it out/putting it in all the time. Apparently a big hit with theives at the mo. I was thinking about putting the unit either low down ie forward of the transfer lever or up high maybe on the rooflining somehow. Ideally some way of folding it away when not in use away from prying eyes. My brother did a really cool thing on the top of his dash in his galaxy which has a kind of lift up cubby hole, I know that moving it too far from the windscreen will necessitate an exterior antenna but not too bothered about that. Anyone else got one? Dont tell me to get lost because I can't I've got GPS.

Ive got satnav fitted as standard on my Disco3:p

However, ive also got a TomTom One and its far better than the unit fitted to this heap of crap:cool:

you could make a frame out of the thin square mesh used for rabbit hutch doors and layer it up with some fiber glass, paint it, couple of self tapping screws through the bottom to either the dash or in frint of the diff lever and roberts your mothers brother.

i'm making a switch panel to fit there for a few electrical goodies i'm plumbing in (mainly lights, nothing exciting really).

dead simple to do and is easy to make it look 'fixed' to put off wannabe tea leaves.

An idea is to somehow mount it behind the sun visor. ie when you leave the car fold it down and it hides the satnav, and your average stereo/gps nicking chav isnt clever enough to think of looking there. I could pick up a 12v supply from elec sunroof supply or summat.

make a custom visor from scratch..... ebay a visor, strip it back to the framework, strengthen it, make the mount as mentioned from fiberglass or even try and get someone to vacum form some plastic around it! you would need to make a clip or similar to go into the map slot above it to hold it up. (or you could buy a map instead!!!)

I can get round locally no probs. I live on an island - if you get to the sea you turn round and go another way. The TT is actually a brilliant piece of kit. I recently went to Canada and just got a map for it and put it in the hire car and found my way round easily.

I was thinking of the out of sight out om mind technique. You have to take the charger and the window mount off too. We don't get much of that sort of thing round here. More like sheep rustling etc.

Tom Tom one.... where's the off road element to that?

Check this out:

O2 - Phone details

It will run both TomTom and Memory map, for 'on' and 'off' road sat nav
and being a phone, your not going to leave it in your car!

Been runing an orange M600 with both the above software for months and it works a treat, However this unit rocks... I can't wait to get one, end of the month hopefully...:D

I think a TT One is small, but not sure how small?? Will it fit in the ashtray or coin holders? Then they can slide out and it's in there, plugged in and facing upwards? I know it's a bit out of line of sight, but I rely on the voice more than the screen instructions. Or somehow attach to the bottom of the cup holders so when you get it out, the unit slides out with it? Don't know.

I use an Orange SPV M2000 with a bluetooth gps. It's ace. When you leave the car, just grab the unit out of the drop in holder, because it's your phone too so you need it with you! The bluetooth GPS turns itself off after 10 mins of non-use so you can just leave it hidden away (it recieves fine even under the seat- make sure you get a newer SIRF III one) and walk away without drawing attention to it. The drop in holder for the phone can easily be disguised by dropping a small white note pad into it, 'cause then it looks just like one of those stick-on-windscreen notepads that taxi drivers have! Even put a shopping list on the front page of the pad for extra authenticity.

Now thats a good solution. Its OK taking the TT off the mount but often chavs assume its in the glovebox. This is a good diversion.
