Due to a shagged uj I removed the front prop today (to be rebuilt when parts arrive), I just been for a drive and have noticed two things,
1, a knocking when changing gear (didn't do this with front prop on).
2, far less transmission slap than before.

I've been underneath and I have 1/8 of a turn of play on the transfer box and a little less on the front axle.

Ant ideas as to why this is ?

Cos you are running one prop only it increases backlash massively. Dont worry about the knock. The other change is because your uj was shagged and is now removed. Just replace your ujs with gkn ones. Forget bearmach or other they are junk.

if you engage diff lock ,you slide a collar over out put shaft so connecting it to diff case splines , out put splines are wide spaced meaning there will be some backlash ,if center diff is poor backlash may well feel less ,what exactly is transmission slap

By slap I meant backlash, just didn't know what to call it before.

So from what you say the chances are my center dif is warn, is this something that can be easily changed or do I need to replace the transfer box ?
