Hi all, I have a 300TDI auto at lowish speed going on/off the throttle I'm sure I can here the gearbox or the transfer box making a clonking noise.I've checked the hardy spicer joints(and greeced) and fitted a new rubber joint on the rear prop. and still it does this.
When the rear prob was off and diff lock engaged I noticed that there was a lot of play buy moving the tranmision brake drum.
How would I know if the chain or a gearbox shaft is worn.
Also can this be fixed buy removing the transferbox with the gearbox in situ.

A smallish clonking noise is quite 'normal' for a Landy, you gotta remember ther is a lot of gears and linkages, each one would only need a few 1,000's of an inch and it will all add up to a lot of play.
That's why you never pull the handbrake on when it's still moving, it can do a lot of damage, and also when on a steep hill, having stopped on yer footbrake, if you apply the handbrake, and release the footbrake, it will roll forwards a few inches !!!!

I was just going to say that !! - on my wife's TDI200 it used to clunk really badly, had the A frame ball joint replaced and now she's as quiet as the grave - so is the car, bum bum !!!:) :D :D

Make sure your hi lo range lever is fully engaged! mine clonks like an Irish dancer in clogs if you haven't pulled the lever fully back into hi range!

I also get a loud clonking, if I go underneath I can re create it by turning the prop's it sounds to me like I have play in the transfer box and in the diffs.

Any advances on this?
