Transfer box wrong filler hole hole?

I replaced the rear seal on the transfer box today, and apart from the oem seal being a britpart one on delivery (probably be changing it again soon then), it went pretty well.

But on re filling, I managed to get around 4 litres in rather than the 2.8 stated in the haynes manual before i stopped. It didnt overflow and upon typically finding a useful thread on here afterwards, I fear I may have used the wrong hole?? I filled using a hole located high on the box on the passenger side.

Where is the correct hole? And can i just undo the correct filler and let it drain down or is it best to drain and refill?

Forgive my idiocy, but im not massively mechanically minded......

wrong hole thats for temp sensor when fitted ,filler is near hand brake drum ,1/2 inch square drive

How do you fill the transfer box and gearbox, given up with garages and want to do a DIY job but seems bloody difficult to get a spout of any description into the filler holes especially as the car is on the drive rather than on a ramp ?

This is what i use Clarke CGG500 500cc Oil Suction Gun - Machine Mart

buy a one ltr bottle of oil the type with the flexible tube in the neck. stick the tube in the filler hole and squeeze the bottle it might take a few goes. but better than the oil syringes you can get I have an oil syringe and it ****es oil all over the place when you try to use it.

Not really it's a Lazer one but it only draws about 1/4 load/ you then have to tip it up and press the plunger in to get the air out and then repeat the refill procedure. When ya trying to crawl under the vehicle to get it into the box the oil is dripping out of the rubber tube. I find the old oil bottle much cleaner and easier.

you can get better ones ,but pump is the kiddy ,someone on here in the last few days had a cheap pump solution i have an old 60s winding bucket which wil never fail

just use a cheap pump up pressure sprayer from garden centre. remove spray nozzle and fit a length of hose.

Agreed, this was on the thread I read (Buster??), I used an oil syringe- bit of a pain in the arse! Especially when you use the wrong hole !!!!!

(So the wife tells me)

it helps to stand the container of oil in a bucket of hot water for a bit to warm it up so it flows easier.

I use a Laser Multi Purpose Mini Pump from Halfrauds, works really well.

The lower hole is the right hole , so drain it of to it. I overfilled years ago and my transfer oil seal went soon after. Use the 1 litre bottles [wilkinsons do it cheap] I found making a hole in the bottle bottom [to let air in],once it was inverted helped the oil come out quicker.

Sorted it now......

I use a hose pipe with funnel fed through engine bay. just have to pre measure oils.

I made the same error yesterday and I suspect we're not alone...…….

I bought a 12v leccy oil pump off ebay. Cost £12 oil changes are done in minutes now
