hello ther peeps does eny body no how to do the tracking on the defender 200 tdi its hurting my brain need help S.O.S cheers the gyp

go to a place thats got special tracking gear ,its adjusted with rear of axle track rod ,tow in for rear wheel drive ,tow out for front or straight for landys

Local place to me charged me a tenner to check and adjust my tracking. I know I could get it pretty close myself by fiddling about with a tape measure, but for £10 I'd rather let them do it with their groovy laser thingummyjigs.

I was £40 to get the laser tracking done on my car, A landys tracking needs checked regularly as it does get knocked out when your off roading.

I check mine with the tape measure once a month

I have used Just Tyres for my 90 for years now, checks are free and if it needs adjusting it is about £20. In 11-years mine has only had to be adjusted twice and that was after I had fitted new parts, new TRE's the first time and new steering bars & TRE's the second time. They don't have a problem with larger tyres either, I have 265/75x16's and they aren't an issue.
I did once get my local garage to check/adjust it (after the new steering bars) but I was never quite happy with the result, took it to Just Tyres again and they found it was a fraction out. They adjusted it, I got my money back from the local garage and the steering was back on top form again.

Sorry Andy - I didn't make that very clear.

How do you check with a tape measure? I've taken mine to a few garages but they said that they couldn't check the tracking because the wheels are too big to get their kit on. I asked at a coach company in York before I moved but they wanted £60 for checking.

I currently run 235/85/16 insa Sahara tyres and the garage i use will adjust the tracking. I have knocked mine out a few times, Busted TRE's bent steering rod, before that playing in big holes so it is now one of the monthly check s i do.

To check your tracking get a your landy with it's full weight on the suspension and use a tape measure to measure the distance between the the edge of each wheel just behing the track rod. Then measure the distance 180 degrees around from this. The measurement should be the same for zero toe in and anywhere up to 3mm greater for toe out. I keep mine at 2mm. I find it easier to read the tape measure if i use say a M8 bolt about 50 mm long and hold this on one wheel and measure to it, that way you arnt trying to bend the tape around so you can read the tape clearly. If it needs adjusted crack of either the locking nuts or the clamps and slowly turn with a pair of stillsions or similar. Once set and clamps/lock nuts are tightened recheck again.

If the tracking is set as above and your still having problems you will probably find that something else is out

Andy, why do you set your to 2mm (I'm guessing 2mm toe OUT - in the context of your post)? Is this for off-roading? Would 'zero' be the best setting for 90% on-road use? I'm guessing you're measuring from the wheel rim - am I right?

Feels like mine are toeing out quite a bit. Going to have a go at it today if I get a chance.

The LR spec for Defender is 0 to 6mm Toe IN!

spec is 0-2mm toe out as wheels are driven pulling wheels in,toe in for rwd where wheels are pushed out

Not according to my copy of Rave. Has it changed in the last few years?
