ratty

I'm not special I'm limited edition
Has anyone got any experience with the el cheapo tracking devices off ebay.

I've seen this and although it's cheap Chinese tat I'm just wondering if it may help me to keep the landy in MY possesion.

Somebody had a pop at it again last week and then last night the office at work got a suspicious phonecall asking for me to turn the alarm off on my landy cos it was allegedly going off non stop for an hour. I'd only left to go to work 30 mins earlier and it hadn't sounded before I went and the missus didn't hear it after I went.:mad:

Even stranger is that it is pretty much a year ago to the day that my last one got done.

for £82, I might be prepared to take a gamble, if your landy is worth a grand or two. The only reservations about that unit are the antennae. They're both pretty visible, and don't know if any clued up landy thief would know what they are and just rip them off.

Not sure why you would want to control the oil pressure remotely either, unless it's a translation error. The last thing you would want to do if it's stolen is drop the oil pressure. Not only would you have to go and recover it, you'r have to fit a new engine too !

Cheers OP

It's £82 or make an offer. If I got it for about £70-£75 I have a voucher to get a further £5 off. My figuring is that it is worth a gamble at that price. If anyone had any experience or knowledge of them it could make it even less of a gamble.

I was wondering about stuffing the antennae in the gap between the plywood lining and side panels in my rear tub to hide them.

As for cutting the oil. I decided after reading it about 3 times that they mean fuel supply.

wouldnt touch it.

basically what you are buying there is a mobile phone.

it works on the GSM band and has a positioning system..... - just buy a mobile phone with GPS.. does the same thing.

all that monitoring it says it does, it actually doesnt.. only works when you send an sms to the unit to activate a function, for example, to hear what's going around...

buy a mobile phone, hide it and setup with aut answering for a certain number... when you call the phone you'll be able to hear what's going on..

another thing... if you get for example an O2 sim to put in the unit... if they take the landy to an area of no coverage... you cant get comms with the unit.

also.... dont really understand how their tracking system works and they dont even explain it....

on a mobile phone you can do triangulation on the macro antennas and get a rough idea where it is, gets easier if the phone is moving, but you'd need to get police involved and the police to get the operator involved... very unlikely they'd go through all the trouble just for a nicked car.
it's usually used for kidnaping, missing persons, etc....

ive personally never bothered with tracking devices, there very expensive and most thieves who are stealing to order know exactly what a tracker looks like and where to find them.

ive always used kill switches hidden away as the best form of defence. a battery isolator somewhere, a fuel pump isolator somewhere else. a thief isnt gonna spend time working out why a vehicle wont start so make it difficult for them to hop in and drive off.

dont know the full details or prices but there is a system for boats where you can text a reciever mounted on the boat and make it do things like turn lights and heating on or check bilge levels. a simple version of this would be to use an old pager and have the feed that would normally make the pager vibrate when it recieves a message send a signal to a relay that could cut the power supply to the fuel pump or other circuit of your choice. this doesnt help you untill you know the car has been nicked but it could stop the thieving ****s getting too far with ya car

I know the theives wont get my landy running to drive it away but as I have had my truck broken into, 1 landy nicked, 1 pushed down the road and then torched when they couldn't get it running and the current one attacked 3 times (twice within the last week) I am not keen on relying soley on an alarm or immobiliser. A thief only knows where a tracker is AFTER taking your vehicle and removing it NOT BEFORE. It has cost me personally £8.5k in 2 1/2 years. That doesn't include the last landy which the insurance actually paid up for or the 12 weeks it took to get the money. Bearing in mind there is a CCTV camera 200yds from where my vehicles are parked none of the attacks has been caught on camera. The police don't give a **** and haven't even been in touch to give me a crime ref number the last 2 times. I am after a device where I can take action off my own back. Enough is enough.:mad::mad:

so, there's a cctv camera 200yards away..

but do you have any CCTV?
if you dont, just put some cameras up with movement sensors..
you can even get fake ones with a red LED and with movement sensors...

that's where I would start. (if you dont have cctv that is)

I live on a footpath so my landy is parked 200yds (as the crow flies) away from my house. I can't see it from my house either.:(

There's an advert in this June LRM talks about a cheap tracking system. Buy the unit for £250 and then only pay when yu use it to track the vehicle. Also claims to alert yu if the vehicle is being attacked.

Have a look at Sentinel Vehicle Tracking, from AVT

Its their AVT Sentinel system in the ad

Due to my hours being cut so i'm £100 a week down on wages I can't afford that at the moment. It is much cheaper than most of em though.

you can have a mobile phone tracked for a few quid. If it goes missing you contact the company and they send a txt telling you were it is. All you have to do is hide a mobile phone in ya landy attached to a phone charger permanently.
