What tools would you guys say are definately needed and other ones that would be handy to own. i am thinking for birthday presents as my next birthday is the one before i hope to buy my 1st landy (early 90).

are there any particular sizes that are most common?
spanners or sockets? or mix of both?
any good sources of quality tools? snap-on was the most common at my work experience but well out of my price range!!!

cheers Ross

Draper aint a bad place to start for home tools.

A 7 to 22 socket set and spanner set will cover most things. Any bigger than that then just buy the sizes as you need them.

Then there are torx bits, hex bits, allen keys, etc... etc...

Just buy tools as you need them otherwise you won't be able to buy parts for your landy.

Halfords proffesional are very good value for money, you could get a good socket set for £60, and a set of ratchet spanners for £40.
As for screwdrivers, Halfords, B&Q, or even Aldi, Netto, Asda.:D

Ebay can be a good source of tools but be aware the the inflated postage prices.

Try and find someone local you can collect from.

I have seen people selling whole boxes of half decent tools cheap.

PS If you are looking at buying an old Landy you may need to get hold of a welding set.

Mine gets quite a lot of use, especially when MOT due

When you buy tools look out for those cheapy ones made of poor quality steel where the jaws actully bend open, I was undoing injector pipes with some of them once, and by the end of the job the 10mm were about 12mm. That was a set someone gave to me, the socket set in it has done me good though.

Before I carried on I bought a set of new stanleys for about £20 they are brilliant.

You all missed the obvious ones:

All you need is a working mobile and a good credit card
(As my wife tells me and she is never wrong)

Its not cheep but it will get you out of almost any problem.
Personally you can do a lot with a big hammer, it might not fix anything but it makes you feel better.
:D :D

i thought i had mentioned the big ammer in my first thread clive, there are cheap tools and there are bargain tools, its the bargains you want. i have some old spanners that come in hgv wagons when you buy em new, iveco are good fer that and the tools are strong enough to grind and cut into those special tools that we all make fer the important little jobs ;)
