Tool kit must have's

OK, as a new owner of a defender 110 I'm asking..........

What essential must have's for the tool kit should I be looking at? I'm not talking at the moment about hoist's, grinders, welders, yadda, yadda, yadda but more your hand tools.

I appreciate that I may come across a bit of a "spanner" for asking and probably look like a bit of a "tool" but if ya don't ask, ya don't learn! :blabla:

fuses, wire, pliers, tape, chewing gum, screwdrivers, small spannerset, small socketset, more tape, bulbs, torch, wire connector clips, mobile phone battery, extra torch battery, rationpack, gloves, hat, more tape, chocolate, map, wellys, adjustable spanner, spade, blanket, socks, more tape, book, plasters, oil, water, bottle jack, lump of wood, brace, wd40, endless really...whatever you have...its not gonna be what you need!!

Decent 1/2" drive socket set.
Big hammer.
Set of combination spanners.
Big hammer.
Torque wrench.
Big hammer.
Set of screwdrivers.
Big hammer.
52mm socket.
Big hammer.



Did I mention big hammer?

You will never carry everything you want to. If you don't believe me you oughta see the back of my landy. It's generally full when I'm offroading.

So basically, put everything in your own that you think you WILL need and hope that the one thing you DO need, someone else will have?

The thing to remember is that if you don't have the replacement part for whatever you broke then all the tools in the world won't be of any use to you at all. (except to chuck up the lane in anger).

So for basic everyday driving all you need is something to tighten/refit loose wobbly parts. So as Trewey said socket set, Screw driver, allen key sets etc Oh and seeing as Trewey forgot to include it in his list, you also need a fooking big hammer.

And a good 27mm impact socket and breaker bar to undo the wheel nuts and a bottle jack/trolley jack to replace the spare wheel yourself...... and a spare wheel and tyre.

do what i did, my dad used to ow LR's so i pinched his little tool kit, it already holds all the little oddments that get used a lot by LR owners! Including, most usefully, a spare set of points for a 2.25petrol, most useful ive found, as i drive a 300tdi...

What I'm planning to do is treat myself to a few really decent kits (sockets, screwdrivers, etc.) for the garage then collect together all the old odds and sods of same to build a kit for the Landy. I'll certainly second or third (or is it fourth) the idea that you won't ever have everything and the thing you actually need will probably be annoyingly small/common rather than the special or unusual stuff. So, for me, it's things like wire (for tying up/binding), wire for temporary electrics, tape, maybe jubilee clips, things like that end up being useful. More than once (on MGs this is) I've had the tools but not the bit of wire or the short metal rod or poking stick that's the key to the repair. In the garage I'm forever using bits of crap like that during a procedure - not as part of the actual repair, just to retrieve a nut or something. At the roadside, in all normal days you'd find that stuff by the road but you know where you break down it'll be pristine and rubbish free.

Rather than having a huge set of spanners which inevitably will not include the one you need, you could carry a set of the most common sizes and then include a good quality adjustable or other multi-size 'tool'. You'd never want to use such in a workshop but they're fine for emergency on the road.

Sorry I wasn't very clear in my initial post, I have over the years collected a certain number of tools, bits & bobs and learned very quickly to buy quality, what it was I wanted to know is.........

Are there any special sized sockets/spanners bits and bobs that would be overlooked in the normal kit form, I've come across this in the past with other projects and thought I'd call on experiance instead of hitting a stumbling block on a Sunday afternoon for instance.

I've also seen this chest and am going there on Sat to have a good look, so was also asking the basics of a carry kit.

9/16 socket from propshaft bolts (difflock do a nice propshaft tool)
32mm flat spanner for viscous fan
T55 torx bit for R380 gearbox filler (300tdi/Td5)
ball joint seperator comes in handy
as does a 2.5ft 1/2" drive braker bar
good set of mole grips
set of chisels
good set of drill bits
Drill, small angle grinder
Dont worry about a welder. the above come in handy far more often wish id bought mine earlier than i did

That should sort you for a while.

Basic Land Rover toolkit:
Big hammer
WD 40
Gaffer tape

if it moves and shouldn't, gaffer tape it til it doesn't move any more.
If it should move and doesn't; spray it with WD40 and hit it with the hammer til it does!!

I have all the above and had to get a voltmeter yesterday. Tools are a passion or hobby there is always something else you need and you will never have enough

And dont forget the basics ------------ OIL and WATER -------- has been done ...

which doesnt mean a bottle of vimto and a bacon sandwich...but add them anyway.
