I've been trying to improve my fuel economy, and part of this has involved fitting a safari snorkel- to take advantage of the air ram effect as well as cooler cleaner air. I also fitted the K&N performance air filter...

Now I'm told that this may actually reduce economy at high speed, as excess air can affect the fuel air mix!!!

Is this a load of bollocks - especially as the MAF on the TD5 should account for this:confused:

By the way I've no cat, de-egr'd, and removed the mid box to help things out the other end..

I know what it is, I wanted to know why the OP thought it would come into play on a Landrover with a snorkel ... ;)

A snorkel which actually make the engine work harder as it has to suck the air a lot further. It will actually decrease mpg but not really noticeably.

There will be no ram effect its not a ram intake

On mine the original intake had an opening of about 3" x 1", which was mostly hidden behinda a small flap ... the snorkel has about a 5" x 2 1/2" opening with corresponding csa throughout till it hits the standard airbox. I like to think the extra length of the air inlet is offset by the greater csa allowing a greater volume of air through ...

However, that's conjecture, the only way to actually know if a snorkel improves, or doesn't, the airflow is to do before and after airflow measurements. Anything else is subjective.

You'd be better off getting it remapped and driving sensibly! That works. Ram air from a snorkel? Think you're hoping there! If you want more air in its got a turbo so how about you up the boost and the fuelling to match? That's the normal way. Gains from stuff like snorkels is either none existent, negligible, or a loss! If snorkels give more power why don't the rally cars have them as standard? I can't think of a competition car that has a snorkel fitted for power which suggests to me that they don't force more air in!?!?
A snorkel is great as a.......................... snorkel!!!!!

Bin the snorkel because if you go deep enough to need it your ECU will be flooded. Even if your motor was completely watertight you could never go deep enough to need the snorkel because your wheels would float just like a boat. JMHO

I think this has answered my question(s)...

I'm still happy with my snorkel as it will work as a snorkel - which is why I fitted it... and even happier with the K&N air filter as it wont result in 'too much air'!

It will probably improve power a little as the engine is drawing in colder denser air which is good.
Filter will last longer as well so all good:)
