to sidestep or not?

Thinking about getting side steps for the following reasons:

1. To give some car park protection as i have no door strips
2. to give some protection when off roading as although the ground clearance reduced if i ground it without then it will be expensive sill damage.
3. Help me reach stuff on the roof rack etc.

Whats people experience?

You'll only end ripping the side steps off if you go laning with them fitted.

good question, im thinking of putting some on mine too but when i ask myself why the only reasons i can think of are 1:they look good, 2:my nan can get in my car, 3:i like doin stuff to my motor and am running out of things to do, and reasons not to,:- less ground clearance, 2:- makes you slightly wider, and thats it as far as i can see. To be honest im more onroad than offroad so i think steps may be the way for me (i can always take em off) let me know the cheapest decent ones you find (best ive got so far are £115 delivered new off fleabay)

I think they look awful. Plus the brackets holding them on act like ground anchors when you get into deepish mud. Plus they trap ****loads of muck thus hastening the demise of your sills. Oh and did I mention they look awful

side steps get mud on yer jeans when you go out playing, you wouldnt want that!

No they are metal... I know because I have them fitted but still don't know of the benefit of having them fitted other than I think they look good.

They also take away from the ramp-over angle, they're cheaply made (mostly) and can't take knocks, even small ones.

I can see the point of rock/treesliders, indeed I want some, they're heavy and wide enough to be a step, where steps just become a liability off-road and can't become rock/treesliders. The only saving graces as far as I'm concerned of steps are the accessibility and car-park arguments, but then, my Disco has so many little knocks already and is usually muddy, so no-one parks near me anyway!!

If you search egay Disco 2 sliders are available. Guardian make a set but they aint cheep

they do em but your lookin at about 230 squids

Don't do it. I put some on and after a couple of times off road I took em off again. They were knackered to hell. If you don't venture off road then fine.

them there rock sliders do look pretty nice mind...................

i have them only because the misses and the kids find it awkward getting in the thing. if i had a choice i would leave them off but if you do go off road it dosent take long to pop them off but if you dont need them save your money for some guards for underneath

I have them on my D2 and I think they look crap. They really spoil the look of the car for me. My kids are still quite small and find them useful for getting in and out. It's only a matter of time to I take them off though, cause I really hate them.

i never had any panel damage until i went laneing after i took them off, now i have a dent in my back quater.
they act as rock sliders to a certain degree, but rock / tree sliders do the same job and are much sterdier.
when there on you have about an extra 2-3 inch's before your panels come into contact with a steep bank, with them off the only thing to hit the bank is you panels
choice is yours really, side protection or none at all.
i'm fitting rock sliders soon to protect the side's of my disco,

that is when i get some bloody time

mine has them and judging by the bend in one of them from last time i went out I'm glad they are there.. if that had been the body panels it would have been expensive.. obviously rock sliders would be better but I reckon sommat is better than nout.

Better get saving too, at TWICE THE PRICE of sidesteps and just a thought, they protect your sills right but what about the rest of the underneath? i know they do guards to cover various bits but does anyone just do a massive sheet that can cover the entire underside of the car - like you see on some rally cars - or is that dodgy?
