to fit an overdrive or not

i am considering fitting an overdrive to my 109 diesel series 3 but i have been told that it is not worth it as it is a big job to fit it and apparently all the oil drains out into the transfer box so needs topping up regularly. i was told this by an ex soldier so he has been around quite a few landys so the is this true and also the question is to fit or not to fit

To the best of my knowledge the Army did not fit overdrives, so I'm not sure being an Ex-soldier has any relevance.
There are a number of reason for and against fitting an overdrive, they make it nicer to drive, but probably don't save much on fuel (it depends what sort of driving you are doing) and there have been plenty of threads on here about it, but I wouldn't call is a particularly big job, and in the twenty years I've had had mine it's never transferred it's oil into t-box.

DONT listen to em overdrive on a series is the best thing since sliced bread ,once you try it you wont go back to not havin one,if you have a cubby box extend the lever its so much easier to use, that way ,extension not needed if no cubby box,,,,,,,,,,enjoy,,,,dave

leave it on the petrol 88 and sell the 109 my 88 series 3 ported 2.25 petrol had a overdrive on it and you get well over 100mph on a nice long bit of stubble field o and watch out for ruts it hurts having girders as suspension.

i didn't do any thing to it only when the engine was removed we noticed it had been ported but don't know what else had been done.
and when i say well over 100mph i think it was 115mph and it was really pushing it.

Top speed on a series 2.25 petrol was 60 on a good day on tarmac! you sure it wasn't a KPH speedo??

yes it was in mph and redhand my buddy has a 2.25 diesel series 2a and that dose 60mph flat out are you getting the diesel and petrol one mixed up.
my series 3 2.25 petrol engine did 83mph flat out before i stuck overdrive in.
only thing it only did 15mpg if you were good gentle acceleration, breaking and didn't go over 50 following a 25t lorry the whole way.

Think Landrovers quoted top speed for 2.25 petrol was 70mph and that was brand new and in mint condition Me td90 won't do more than 70.

some one must have done some tuning to the engine when they rebuilt the engine that came out of my 88.

got a series one with an overdrive, a series three with an overdrive, and another series one with no overdrive, but I've just bought one for it, took me about 45 minutes to fit it, by myself, having never done one before

Get one, the more levers the better!

want one me - did get 70mph out of my tested by my girlfriend driving next to me in an astra van doing 70mph !! mine is an 84 plate with 54k on the clock - honest

You can get over 70 in a Series landie eventually. But 115? LOL!

Overdrives are good and not very difficult to fit. There are guides out there with instructions to get the exact place to cut the tunnel and so-forth.

Dunno whats wrong with all your crap,my IIA does the standing 1/4 in an easy 12.2 secs at 109mph. Does 138mph in third,and top will run on to 166mph.
Does 58mpg all the time too.
