to fit an overdrive or not

My 2.25 S2A does 90 up a hill in first. Some of you guys in this thread must have right old clapped-out Landies.

I've heard a few people say that if the landy spends most of it's time on the road rather than off road then fitting range rover diffs is better than an overdrive???? not sure if this is true but something that I might be interested in doing myself to my own 2 1/4 series 3 diesel if any of the more knowledgeable guys on here could spread some light on this idea... i.e. any particular type of Range rover, year/model?

So what IS the rough MPG for a 2.25 petrol series 11a? and how can it be improved? I have calculated it five times to be about 12! I have LPG tho, so I can double it, but also my carb needs serious attention. Any other improvements? got O/D, and Kenlowe fan, prob could do with some better tyres, but maybe I just resign myself to not travelling too far in it!

Yes, when I use high octane unleaded, it definately improves running, and if I stick to under 50, on road, I probably get better MPG, but even on LPG, I'm still getting small return! does the carb condition make much of a difference using Gas? I suppose the phrase cake, and eat it comes to mind! It is indeed a pleasure to own such an amazing piece of engineering, that has survived 42 years of driving! (which, unfortunately has ears, and a 5th sense when it comes to knowing when there is some mission I need it for, and throwing a sicky)..

Cheers, yes, that is what I INTEND to do, just finding funds and time to do it tho! I deep in the fix of rear axle at present. I have been wanting to overhaul the zenith, for a while, and get the LPG system serviced. At the same time, I need to make it seem fine, so the missis don't complain it's not worth havin'. Tricky balancing.

speedo error.
mine has lots of things improved and only does , whatever.
but, the speedo definitely doesn't over read.
i met a man once whose morris traveller did 100mph. well that's what he said.
all standard parts and a 1100cc engine.
ho hum.............

For what it's worth, here's my h'peth... I run a S111 109 on both LPG and petrol. No overdrive. Petrol gets better MPG, but best is around 20 mpg, usually about 17. Gas gets around 14- 18, but half the price. I have a 7:1 head, so will never get best performance from gas. 8:1 is better, but the V8's run best.. Ignition timing should be well advanced for gas. I use 10 degrees BTDC static compared to 3 for petrol. Tyres (and pressures) make a huge difference. Lumpy tyres really cost fuel on the road. Freewheeling hubs are a waste of time- cause more problems than they solve. Max. saving I've had with these is 2mpg, Worth always checking the gas CO on an analyzer. Some garages are friendly for this, especially if you can get them interested. Hope this is of some use...
