Hi all,
I have just changed the timing belt and FEP belt on my 2000 L series engine Freelander.
After the shock of how tight it is to do work in that area I was pleased when the engine started up 1st turn of the key after the new parts had been installed.
However as the engine warmed up the timing belt started to make a noise as if it was too tight?
As I also replaced the tensioner and idler pulleys I am a bit p***ed at the noise.
What could I have done wrong for this to occur I followed the instructions as per the RAVE manual. As the tensioner is set by spring how could it be too tight?
Regards
Phil.

I have removed the belt driving the alternator/ air con, it made no difference.
The noise seems to be coming from the engine mount end. I suppose I will have to strip it down and investigate.

Well I have investigated the noisey timing belt issue and still can't find the cause.
I checked that the timing pins inserted ok then undid the bolt securing the tensioner and checked it was free to move. I then reassembled everything only to find no improvement.:(
Am I the only person to have had this issue? I am willing to accept that I have made some error with the procedure but I don't know what.
Any Idea's or suggestion welcome.
Thanks

Phil.

Hi my friend,

I have completely the same issue. Tomorrow i will visit a local garage and if i found out something...i will keep you informed.

Did you maybe, sort the problem meanwhile??

Zoran

it could be bearings either in the water pump or alternator did you check them for play when you had the belts off

Hi teddywood1,

I didn't check the bearings.
A local garage was doing the work for me, and I guess they didn't check that.
I will mention this mechanic and will see the results.

Thanks
Zoran

Short update,

Just came from the garage and the mechanic told me it's
Not serious. It's the Dayco timing belt that makes the noise.
Because if it's material. He also told me, he instaled Dayco in other engines, and the small noise was also there.

Not heard that one. Dayco were the OE supplier of Rover timing belts.
The Dayco belts on my V6 Freelander and MGF are silent.
