My 53reg TD4 started playing up over the week end and randomly has no throttle response and will hesitate when driving No lights on dash and no smoke out the exhaust. if clutch is pressed it then revs up.

Any ideas what to look at first?

read thru these :

randomly ? ..
check the 'lectric connections to the fuel-rail-pressure-sensor
make sure they are clean ..
rain-water can get in there and cause havoc with corrosion etc ..
be only some millivolts and up to 5 volts passing thru that sensor ..
( after cleaning stick some 'contralube' on them ..
( Contralube | Contralube 770
( can be obtained at a maplin store

~~~~~~~~
other things ( see links above )
the maf sensor
the low pressure fuel pump and its filter
the injectors
as winter is approaching .. be a good time to drain the sedimenter
i.e the thing that collects sediment 'n water from the fuel ..
am assuming a '53 td4 has one .. somewhere ..
Thanks thats given me some ideas of where to look at had the fuel filter change yesterday and the fuel sensor wiring checked which looked ok but was wd40ed etc anyway. when i say randomly i mean it will play up then will be ok.. did 200miles to get home sunday problem only started part way through saturday, And it did it a few times here and there stopped for a break every so often and would not do it on some sections but would on others. did a 5min trip last night and it did not do it but did it 100 yards from my house this morn.
