This is absolutely depressing

Oh bloody hell that might explain why it was hard to change gears and it may not be the clutch!!! Bugger all this work

No oil not even a drop came out of the gearbox when drive shaft was removed

The bottom of my engine is covered in oil and it leaves a dot of oil (what seems like) every time its parked up - I have 2 big patches on the drive made up of these dots (and some servicing 'spillage'!) under the engine corresponding to either nose in or tail in parking. I can't work out where its coming from though! When I check the levels they're always OK. The oil seems to be at its worst where the bell housing meets the block, there's a gap at the bottom filled with a foam sponge and that's sodden with oil. It would presumably indicate the main seal has gone, but engine oil level is steady and I never have to top up between services - possibly a box seal, but that's to the brim. I'm confused o_O

Hey Gel i have oily grease all over my engine i thought it were coming from the cam cover as that is a obvious leak i now guess my drive shaft seal to box is leaking

I put my finger in the drive shaft hole and it was lubed so maybe i am just low on oil i really hope i am not going thru all this for a low oil level i will be kicking my self

Its not unheard of for the PG1 boxes to go low on oil. Over the years I've been on the lookout for cheap Freelanders and seen a couple that have 'lost gears', I looked at 1 L Series that was down to 2 or 3 gears!

It had problems going from gear to gear it revved ok in gear and the clutch worked just the clutch was bitting just off the floor so if i am low on gearbox oil im thinking this could be the cause

Sounds like the box was baulking to me, which is most likely down to the lack of oil.

Clutch on the floor could be sticky lever and/or broken slave bracket or just worn master.

Yeah Nodge i am thinking it was low on oil
Ali the arm moves freely back and forth, the master and slave were just replaced with a new one

so now i have the ird box out i just have a few of the arm mount bolts to undo than the gearbox should come out i had to go purchase a new trolley jack they were on special $99.50

when i removed the ird box oil came out the right side and a little bit of oil came out of the gearbox but not much maybe 100mls in total from the gearbox

how are u guys getting a jack up under the ird box with the dog bone frame sitting under the bottom?

If you read through the thread I listed above you'll come to this post. It might help

Are you talking about the subframe or the frame bolted to the IRD.
Either way I unbolted them.

Yeah the sub frame i keep forgetting what its called, i got the gearbox off and it looks like one of my seals are bad also the throw out bearing is wobbly and it feels like its almost in two pieces

Is it possible to replace the rear crank seal while i have the clutch out?

Yes you can. It's behind the flywheel.

And make sure you grease the gearbox splines, release bearing slide and cover fingers with a small amount of moly grease to prevent binding. It's also advantageous to remove the clutch release spindle and moly grease that too, to prevent future sticking .

Thanks Nodge i already have the clutch back on with 3 bolts, lost one and cut one off that rounded and keeping the sixth one to get some replacements tomorrow or monday, I looked up the LR rear seals and looks like i may screw it up so i wont be doing the seal I'm still unsure where all the oil is coming from its all over the inside of the flywheel area, all over the ird box, all over the front drive shaft ports, there is leaking oil from the cam cover but i am unsure how bad the engine looks to have just been washed and it was leaking on my trip home so possibly the oil has leaked from here down all over and inside the engine

i already installed the throw out bearing but can't seem to get it back off looks like we might get some rain and i have the gearbox out in the open just tucked under the bumper

Cam seal leaks are common on K series. They're a B####r to replace so make sure you get a couple of them cause you'll likely trash the first one.
BTW I think some are sided and some are not so make sure you get the right ones.

Make sure you fit all cover bolts and torque them up to the correct tension. How did you line up the clutch plate?
I'm still unsure where all the oil is coming from its all over the inside of the flywheel area,

Looking at the pictures, the crank oil seal is leaking. This allows oil to cover the flywheel, which is then thrown all over the place. I'd not proceed further, without rectifying the leak.

Ali its just leaking from around the outside of the cam cover

Nodge i have a clutch alignment tool i bought when i done a full engine rebuild on my Nissan Xtrail 4 years ago, where can i buy the oil seal from? the L series engine is hard to find parts for

Owning a LR down under takes planning and a punt on things needing replacement or not.

The only place you'll get decent prices is from the UK - so you have to allow for the shipping times.

I'm sure you will be able to source one locally - either from a LR specialist or Rover car specialist, but you'll pay more.

i will replace the seal either way since the gearbox is an absolute mission to get off i don't want to be doing this again anytime soon

Bearmach don't have a particular good reputation for quality, which is why I linked the one DMGRS sell. He's got a reputation for only selling components that he'd use himself. As you say, the box is a good few hours work to remove, so you don't want to be doing it earlier than necessary. ;)
