hey,

I'm Bram (from Belgium) and as from next week (Nov 15) I'll be working in Chesterfield. The company I work for (DEC) is cleaning up the site of "Avenue Coking Works" on Derby Road. I'll be there for technical support.
Too bad I can't bring my landy (yet), but I have a car at my disposal, so I was wondering if there are any things worth seeing around there. Hows greenlaning over there (in case i bring the landy). I do love museums and love to see a real steam train in action (I know they're plentiful in the UK). Also figured out Peak District isn't too war away, any hiking enthusiasts?..
anyway, all suggestions are welcome.

grts, Bram

tons of green lanes in the peaks. And tons of great walks.Or rides if ya like orses/bikes. Theres a crooked spire to look at in chesterfield and a football team to laugh at.

for trains visit barrowhill roundhouse, about 20 min from avenue works, theres the chesterfield museum in the town centre, mainly about the history of chesterfield and industry's etc,and dont forget to visit the crooked spire, ive lived in chesterfield all my life and live 5 min from coking plant if you need pointing in the right direction, what are they doing with the old coking plant site anyway?,i heard it was going to be turned into a country park
forgot theres some good green lanes and plenty of them and theres 2 or 3 p&p sites around chesterfield area

There are some amazing green lanes in chesterfield. I live between chesterfield and sheffield so I get the best of both worlds. If it snows, snake pass would be an interesting drive but it might be a bit far to go. There are hundreds of green lanes in chesterfield. You can go to holymoorside off roading but last time I went there I destroyed my front axle so I wont be going there again. If you want shops go to the centre of sheffield or meadowhall. If you like hunting, there's a gun shop on ecclesaw road in sheffield along with some other (expensive) shops.

There's a better one even closer - Nevilles in alfreton, although I don't think he'll be all that fussed!

Me dad used to work at 'the avenue' way back when i was a wee un... from there you can be in Matlock/Bakewell/Buxton within 30 mins, allsorts to do.

Trains - there's the barrow hill roundhouse as mentioned, but afaik they're mostly a diesel affair and have very little track. Better is Midland Railway centre at butterley (Ripley) Midland Railway Centre
or the Peak Railway at Darley Dale Peak Rail Official Website

There's also loads of stately houses to visit in the area - if it's your cup of tea - Chatsworth is probably the best of the bunch.

great info, thx. Been here now for 2 days. I must say I like it. Too bad I have to work all day. But I'll be staying over for 2 weekends (nov 27-28 and dec 11-12) so if anyone would go on a 4x4 trip and needs a co..let me know. There's landrover all over the site, but can't drive them. My company drives a Ford :( .
I also heard about steamtrains in York and an old railway which they have used for the Hogward express (harry flopper)..
Also need to do a walk in Peak disctrict, anyone who fancies that?
cheers
