Hi,

Another gearbox question I fear. I can't find an answer to this exact problem anywhere, so bear with me.
I have a 1996 Defender 90, I believe that's an R380 box. Every change is fine, no problems at all, apart from 5th to 4th. That really doesn't want to go, unless I flick it to 3rd first, then it finds the gate no problem at all.

Is it likely to be something nasty and internal in the box, or [hopefully :)] something amiss with the lower lever area, I opened it up and the bias springs are there and intact, beyond that I wasn't sure what to look for.

Many thanks

possible baulk ring but its likely it just needs lever adjusting by the bias springs to ensure its fully aligned with 3rd 4th naturally when you come out of 5th,check the turret for wear in the slots the pivot pin sits in

Great, thanks for the pointers. 3rd to 4th is no problem at all, would that rule out the bias spring lever?

like this: :) Top man, thanks

defender boxes dont have bias plates, they have a spring which acts on a pin going thru lower lever with 10mm spanner sized adjusters to line up stick into 3rd 4th gear alignment remove turret holding lower lever theres a yoke with grub screw that can come loose ,aslo check turret as ball part of lower lever can wear ali housing
