Easily done....you said the guy you met was a nice guy, and you confused me with him - happy days, glad he wasn't a c**t and you thought it was me:D:D:D:D

Yea strange to think I thought you were someone else all this time , I'm intreeged to find out who it was sure dopey or dogsbody will remember ??
Once again sorry oh yea you the pretty one ;)

This thread took a turn for the sweet. It was like watching a nice new nurse talking to the old man with alzheimer's. I would suggest a meeting, but you'd probably forget to attend.

For what its worth, when our 02 L322 started to give trouble at around 120,000 miles we contacted Mackie in Glasgow as they have a good reputation and are used by the dealer. I only had to tell the service manager what vehicle it was and he described the symptoms to me ( namely juddering when pulling away at around 20 - 30 mph ), told me it was doing well as they usually start to go at 80-100k, not to drive as its going to get a lot worse ( just like Saint V8 describes )and book it in asap and join the queue of BMW and RR drivers with ZF boxes. He was so matter of fact about it yet precise that I realised he was right and didnt hesitate to book it in to their production line of refurbishing boxes.
A year later and now at 150,000 and no problems. The 3 year warranty is void though if we dont have the box flushed and refilled by them every 20,000 miles.

Without being crude, would you be able to tell what the cost was??

Mackies (Glasgow I presume) is a bit far for me to go, but keen to see what the prices was to compare...!!

Anyone got any views on K Motors (Lancs)??

Isnt james martin the gearbox guru on here or dosent he do overhauls?

not the l322 though ,but there are a few wise ones on them on here :)
Bemble (RRPhil in other circles) is a L322 GB guru, but I don't have the skills or equipment to drop the box myself and get it to him....plus he is mega busy I am assuming and will be a few weeks before he could fit it in no doubt as he is reportedly that goodhe has people clambering for his services!!...!!

If you don't fancy rebuilding it yourself try Ashcroft Transmissions in Luton. They are nearer to you.
I got my p38 box changed by Autoland, Dunstable, one of the garages they use £325 +VAT. They were very good. In and out in half a day.

Looking at Ashcrofts Site, they dont list the 5HP24 for the L322 onlt the P38 boxes....

Reports I have read/heard are that they have stopped doing the L322 GM box also!!

I might drop them a message on the Electronic in anycase - yer never know!

You may be right but when I was down there a few months ago I got the impression they did all the L/R ZF boxes.

I remember a conversation with Dave Ashcroft about the latest 8 speed box !

I have had two of these units rebuilt and both came with brand new T/C, I still have one of them in a box unused unfortunately the cost to get to the UK would be astronomical otherwise you would be welcome to it at rebuild cost of 1200 quid inc T/C. The company I used supply rebuild kits of genuine origin and are warrantied if you are good with the spanners.

Appreciate the kind offer, but I could probably buy a new car for the cost of shipping!!

Also, whilst me and a spanner are fairly good bed-fellows, I don't have the equipment or space really to drop the box....

Gonna drain the sump and change the filter and see what is occuring and what the fluid looks like tomorrow.....

Yes it wasnt the cheapest at £3k but it was important to us getting a 100,000 mile/ 3 year warranty from a reputable place. That included a new TC and oil cooler and vat.

I really was just mentioning it as the symptoms talked about were exactly as described by them for this ZF G/B on its path to destruction if not rebuilt.

Many thanks, I drove it from work back home this evening so I can drain out the fluid in the morning....juddered a few times between 20-30 and a faint judder between 45-50....

Used Command Shift and the juddering stops, so something is definatly amiss somewhere....

Fluid will no doubt tell a tale!

Went to purchase another pair of ramps on the way home, rated at 2.5 tonne a pair and wide to take the larger tyre size.....also some ramp extensions too....

Reason for the extensions....As I am technically being naughty and running the car up 4 ramps, I didn't want a sudden change in angle as it goes up the ramp and onto the flat, so I bought the extensions to 'smooth' the journey.....

Turns out that although they say on the packaging 'Suitable for both the 1 tonne and 1.25 tonne versions, as soon as the L322 rolled over them, they turned to mush and are now bananna shaped....definatly not suitable for L322 usage....
