On some SRS systems when the ecu is unplugged the firing circuits are connected to earth to remove static and prevent unintentional deployment

Not sure if this is the case for Freelander but worth considering before getting carried away!

the battery is out, the loom is disconnected at the fusebox end and all the plugs are disconnected too so there really shouldn't be any path to ground - but I aint no elec-chicken. The only way for me to be sure about what's happening is to get the loom out and inspect it for faults.
But thanks for the heads up - all thoughts and input greatly appreciated ;)

cheers

winner! winner! chicken dinner!
disconnecting the srs module shorts the airbag and pretensioner looms to ground inside the connector - who knew?
Every day is a learning day.
So removal and inspection of the loom showed no faults & reconnecting the srs module made all the shorts go away - it's looking like the srs module really is foobar.
When the replacement arrives I'll put the car back together and see what's what.

replacement srs module arrived so I put the car back together. The srs light is still on but I think that's to be expected. I need to take it to the mechanic & see if the code can be cleared now.
Ofcourse there's now another fault - the tailgate window wont go up. it tries but then it just beeps and pull back down - kind of. Someone put a ding in the tailgate a few months ago and since then the window can't fully retract but is still went up ok. Now it goes up then does the beepy thing and retracts as far as it can. I've taken the tailgate trim of hoping to find a fault in the loom but I can't see anything.
So I will try and get the srs code cleared tomorrow and then I will take the tailgate off, push out the dent and see if I can fix the fault on the window - it just never ends.

took it to the garage - now the autologic scanner can see the srs module - but the srs module thinks there should be a passenger airbag so it still calls a fault. There is no passenger airbag from new. So if there is a connection on the loom for the passenger airbag I can fit one or trick the srs module by shorting the loom connection with a 1.5 Ohm resistor - but I don't recollect seeing a connection for a passenger airbag when I had the facia off.

The garage also tried to cure the tailgate window problem by putting a chain on the spare wheel bracket & hooking the other end to an I-beam set in the ground and driving away - hillarious & it pulled out the panel but the window still wont park so now I have to take all the gubbins for the window apart to find the fault - bent window mechanism seems the prime suspect. we'll see.

You can fit a passenger airbag. I'd be cautious about going down the resistor route.
I hear that mate - but since I'm struggling to find the connection into the loom on the passenger side neither option is viable at the minute :(

Sorry if this is a stupid question cause I didn't have time to read the whole thread but have you checked the clock spring in the steering wheel for continuity. They fail pretty often causing SRS lights.

Original fault couldn't be diagnosed coz Autologic could not connect to the srs module - I replaced it with a 2nd hand unit. Now Autologic can talk to the srs module and it calls a fault code saying high resistance on passenger airbag - but there is no passenger airbag & never has been. So the replacement srs module seems to be from a vehicle that had a passenger airbag and it doesn't like that it can no longer see one. Since a replacement airbag is "too much money" I am going to try and fool it with a 1.5 Ohm resistor.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I am happy to report that a 1.5 Ohm resistor is the golden ticket! aSRSe light is OUT and I am a very happy bunny :)

last post to this thread:
if you look hard enough you can find free downloads of testbook - clicking on that link will give your confuser a VERY BAD EXPERIENCE - no need to ask how I know
An earlier post to this thread by the legend that is Nodge called out for anyone in the Stevenage area with an i930 to help me clear the codes - well I am now that man, so if you live in the stevenage area and need to clear codes hit me up and I will sort you ;)
