Not sure this is the right section but here goes:-

Currently drive a 1999 Disco 2 TD5 S, manual, 100k miles.

Test drove 2 x Disco 3s today.

First one 2005, TDV6 SE, 82k miles, manual, £14k. Very nice, much smoother, quieter and more refined than my D2. Interior v nice, leather and decent HK stereo, however, there was a noticable whine from gearbox when accelerating particularly in the lower gears. Suspect a bearing on the way out.

Second one 2005 TDV6 S, 65k miles, manual £11.5k. Much nicer to drive than first one, gears much tighter, steering felt slightly more positive, felt a lot newer. But it had cloth trim and the interior felt a bit c and n.:(

So will be keeping my D2 for the time being

Just consider how complex D3 is, and what the repair costs are going to be as they get older. One poster on here has been quoted £6000 for new injectors and pump.......

I have also heard that to replace the turbo the body has to be lifted from the chassis!!!!

I think LR have lost their way, D3 and 4 are just far too complex to last any length of time once the initial wealthy owners have sold them on. Sure they will make more money short term but there will be damage to the brand which is built on capable easily repaired off road/tow cars....

Stick to your D2!!!!

Totally agree with you, I will definitely be keeping my D2.

As an aside, another factor for me with the D3 is the RFL. If you buy one registered before 23/3/06, its £270 per annum, after that date its £460 or £475 depending on model. I think I pay enough tax already without 'donating' another £200 to the government for the privilege of owning a slightly newer car.:amen:

I used to be in land rover dealerships a lot (dropping off dead ones) and when I voiced this opinion to the sales manager he told me that having lots of old defenders running around is good for the image but old discos are bad...not sure how that works but he didn't seem that interested in discos having a lifespan at all
