I'm about to bite the bullet and order a pair of new swivels for my front axle rebuild.

Are teflon swivels better and are the britpart ones any good or is it better to raid my piggy bank and buy genuine land rover parts?

The BP Teflon ones are fine.

I replaced the swivels on my 90 back in 2007 and having had a poor experience of genuine ones in the past was a bit concerned about what to buy. I rang around a few workshops to see what ones they fitted themselves, not just what they sold in the parts dept but what they actually fitted to customer vehicles and all said they fitted the BP items and none had experienced any problems with them.
I bought the BP kits, fitted them and to this day have not had any problems whatsoever. Likewise I have since spoken to several people who have fitted the BP items and they have also experienced no problems.

Hi daddy2,

please excuse the slight segway / hijack, But.

Looking at getting the swivels changed on mine soon. Seems like the BP teflon swivels have a vote of confidence. OR MAYBE NOT... SEE BELOW!!!

what else is recommended /needed for this job?, apart from one shot , new lock washer for bearings.

what seals to replace , bolts likely to break, ??? etc. like everything involved with a landy would like to have everything ready, as i just know If I go ahead i will find something i have forgotten.

OK , just had a search for swivel kits, and have found there are a plethora of different kits, How can I tell which one i need?? ( needless to say the chassis number and reg are no good as these are not the original spec axles, fitted with 300tdi)
Cheers

I think all you need to know is abs or not?
The abs kits have a hole in the top of the top pin for an abs sensor.
I ordered the kit from paddocks and it had everything i needed.

Ive heard bad things about the teflon swivels.

In fact 2 members on here i believe are going through the notions of claiming from ****part for "goods not fit for purpose".

Its been said a million times before about ****part and there reputation  :( There ****, we know they are, so do they but unfortunately people keep buying from them.

I will see if the 2 members in question want to pop along and comment.

Oh Dear,

So BP teflon are not so good, it appears that neither are Bearmach. looking at the pics above, unless there are extenuating circumstances??

Anyone got a supplier they recommend? or is it going to be a case of suck it and see?

Cheers

As far as I can see, there are no good quality swivels anymore.

I may be proven wrong my genuine land rover items, but otherwise I think they are all substandard.

I would not be surprised if genuine LR were identical items to the aftermarket, Britpart source and sell various parts to land rover.

We are driving old vehicles and not all parts are made in house anymore.

Anyway, my solution was:

Purchased a VERY TIDY set of original chrome balls off eBay for £100

Original quality and reliability.

The Teflon coating is **** anyway, recently done a swivel build on a 110 that had Teflon fitted evidently a few years ago and seal area had worn COMPLETELY through to metal, absolute dog ****.

HAVING SAID THAT

if you have regular offset wheels or don't get the vehicle airborne you probably won't break them

But if you wheel hard, I recommend searching out some quality original chrome.

You CANNOT buy aftermarket chrome so all are known good quality.

:hijacked:

Apart from them totally falling apart, what are the symptoms of a failing swivel?
One of mine is leaking and pitted. so is it urgent to replace or can I wait for some other symptoms?

Thanks (sorry for the semi hijack)

just fully rebuilt front and rear axles i fitted teflon bp swivels with new timken bearings new swivel seal and retaining plate with stainless steel M6 bolts new swivel pins and one shot grease :)

There are no symptoms.

You'll be wheeling along and then bang wheel snaps off.

Ok I was wheeling hard on the day mine went but at the moment they let go I was trundling along.

Same with the turquoise disco, you can see the flat road.

Mark L lost his on a huge sand dune in the desert, again as you can see.

Check them regukar for hairline cracks appearing around the throat.

But to reiterate, you are only likely to have problems if you give them a hard time, ie, off road with gusto.

luckily i've managed to get hold of one brand new genuine swivel at a good price, now I just need to find another and a set of four 606666 swivel bearings. but not the cheapies that everyone seems to sell
