Hi,

Car has been running roughly for a while. This morning the tv damper broke clean off the crankshaft pulley. Made a hell of a racket touching the fan. Checked the fan and belts, all seemed fine and continued driving.

Metal disk and rubber broke clean off the crankshaft pulley due to what looks like metal failure at the three lugs as the lugs are still attached to the metal disk with the bolts. The car runs a lot smoother but still has a slight vibration at lower revs. A few questions if you please:

1. Can I continue driving like this? (cost of Britpart replacement is R 5000)I think CharlesY mentioned in one of the other threads relating to rough running that it would not cause any problems? (100 000 miles).

2. Can the loss of power at especially lower revolutions and going up an incline be ascribed to this?

3. Should I also be looking at the condition of the battery (alternator charging) as a possible cause as I believe it is especially true of automatic cars?

4. How does one clean the MAP sensors in the inlet manifold and the MAF sensors as a possible cause of loss of power due to incorrect readings being submitted to the ecu as a result of contamination?

Hope you guys can advise?

you can clean map sensor by removing the 2 bolts that hold it in the manifold and give it a spray with carb cleaner and allow to dry, the maf sensor i wouldnt try cleaning, but you can unplug it and run without and if it improves the car then you have a fault with the maf

Hi Johnlad,

Thanks for the reply. Development since my last posting was that the battery finally died. Replaced it which seems to have solved the M&S lights coming on and the car appears to have a little more responsiveness.

I will have a go at the MAP and MAF as you suggested and see what happens.

Hope you can help with a question re the vibration damper that broke off the crankshaft pully; I have been driving the car at low revs since then ue to the fact that I have been waiting for parts (Xmas etc). Travelled approx.750 km's. How would I know if the crankshaft sustained damage during this time due to vibration?

BTW Good looking fish! Carp?

no, its a barbel, ive heard people say they have driven many thousands of miles without crankshaft damper without any problems, i think any damage would probably show later in the cars life, maybe with more vibration through the car, i changed my busted damper for a second hand one cost £60 and can be done with rad still in car, which is a bonus
