My land rover defender 90 td5 2000 wont start but will run fine when bump started and will start fine when you turn it on and off there after. I have listed the following things we have tryed allready below if anyone can shed any light on this would be really appreciated as we are running out of idea's cheers.

New fuel pump

Fuel filter and fuel filter head

Injector o-rings and washers

Ecu plugs under driver seat checked and are fine

Also engine has a bit of back pressure up the dipstick.

I have read alot of threads over the net and i can only put it down to some sort of fuel problem as it takes a few attemps to start from cold and fires back up fine when you turn it of and on etc. Also i have primed the system many of occasions and let the pump prime itself for twenty or so minutes and still nothing.

Any ideas would be great.Thanks:)

Try glow plugs . in-laws hated starting from cold . Changed the plugs ( 3 out of the 4 where fooked ) starts every time now .

Sounds like it may be the one way valve in the filter head letting the fuel drain back requiring a purge once the engine has stood for a while.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

i asked my freind who owns a few LR and works on them alot if he could by-pass all that and put direct diesel to the engine and he tryed and said it didnt work if this is possible i dont know it was just a idea to try and eliminate the valve but this was the next thing on my list and the glow plugs as when running it is fine and starts up fine once started so i can only put it down to some sort of fuel starvation on start up. It has only covered 49,000 miles so should't think it would be anything serious but you never know.

Also does anyone know how much glow plugs are or the best place to get them from and how do you purge the valve shifty1962.

Will keep everyone updated on the progress.

I have just found these on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Land-Rover-De...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3361c0c63b

Dont know how he could have bypassed the filter housing as the pump delivers fuel at more than 60psi to the fuel pressure regulator.

The TD5 is self purging when you cycle the ignition. If it is the anti drain-back valve then it probably has crap in it not allowing it to fully seal. Only way to tell is to strip the filter housing and clean everything up. The valve lives in one of the filter housing inlets. If the engine is running fine other than this then it does point to a lack of fuel on first startup.

That sounds better, think he was just saying it to get rid of me lol.

The filter housing we stripped down and cleaned new gaskets when built back up, This is the part that lies on the drivers side rear of the engine just under neath the head. We have done this but still no luck. Done oil change today to see if this makes it better but no difference.

The only thing that dosn't seam right is that when its warm there is steam coming up through the dipstick when you pull it out. Is this a sign of anything.

One more question can a td5 start with duff glow plugs. Sorry for all questions.

What you stripped was the fuel pressure regulator. The fuel filter housing lives on the chassis just in front of the off side rear wheel. It has four pipes goint to/from it and the fuel filter screws on to it. It is in one of the hose inlets that the valve lives.
Some fumes from the dipstick/rocker cover are normal providing they are not excessive.
My money is still on the filter housing valve.

Ok i will try and have a look at this sometime today or tommorow as i am busy at work so will keep you posted.

The fumes(steam) are like about 10 secs after boiling a kettle they are just blowing out a bit. Might just be normal not sure though.

Thanks for help will keep you posted. Its starts ok just take a few go's to get going on morning.
