hi

hope some one can help me with disco 2 auto problem I am having going up hill.
i can only seem to go up at a max of about 30ish mph, i can go from just over 2000 rpm to over 3000 with almost no speed increase. it seems like i have no more forward power it just wants to rev more. last week I could charge up hills no problem.

The EGR has been removed. iv ran it with the MAF disconnected (been told it will work at default). cleaned the MAP out and still have the problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

If the engines revving but you aint moving then yer looking at a knackered clutch or if it's an auto, lack of gearbox oil.

The problem on early TD5 autos is the Torque Converter which allows too much slip, and shows itself particularly on hills or when towing.

One way of improving this is to fit an Ashcrofts modified TC which reduces the slippage and therefore send more engine power through the gearbox to the wheels.

Yes, but even so I never have any problems getting up to 70 mph or so with the standard TC. 30 definitely indicates a problem.

that gearbox is full of clutches ...

more seriously, I would first check the gearbox oil level as I already had similar problem, I don't know the specific tricks of the Td5 auto gearbox, but a visiting friend also suggested the pump that sits behind the TC (he said there is a manometer output underneath to check the pump pressure)

ok so i changed the auto box oil and filter took it for a test drive and it changes gear much smoother, but still got the problem. :( transfer box? or still gearbox

thanks for the help

Just had a look at the Discovery I workshop manual on Rave. Best description is slip in all forward gears. First diagnostic is a pressure check - if no or very low pressure, blocked filter or pump fault. Low pressure - Restricted filter or sticking primary
regulator. Normal pressure - Fault with Clutch A.

I hate to say it but it looks like the auto box - torque converter slipping, pump on it's way out or a clutch failing. I hope for your wallet that it's not.

Good luck - if you find out what the problem is, let us know. By the way, Ascroft Transmissions are advertising a recon gearbox fitted for about 1275.

Cheers!

You can do a stall test - hold the brake on (hard!) with your left foot, put the gearbox in drive and floor the throttle. It should go up to around 2,700 rpm if the transmission is OK - below from RAVE:

4. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and note the tachometer reading. The figures should be as given below. Do not carry out stall test for longer than 10 seconds, and DO NOT repeat until 30 minutes have elapsed.
l V8: 2200 to 2400 rev/min
l Diesel: 2600 to 2800 rev/min
5. A reading below 1300 rev/min indicates a torque converter fault, ie stator free-wheel.
6. A reading between 1300 and 2200 rev/min (V8) or between 1300 and 2600 rev/min (Diesel) indicates reduced engine power.
7. A reading above 2400 rev/min (V8) or above 2800 rev/min (Diesel) indicates clutch slip.

hi all thanks for all the help

this video is with the brake on

and this video is going along, it does look like i floor it (just before 3000) but i am increasing throttle at the same rate, and look at my speed.

thanks

I had this same proble with my old TD5 I thought it was all sort of exspensive problems. I could not get up steep hills with out flooring it and only getting approx 30 MPH. It turned out to be the wast gate arm to the turbo had disconnected. I reconnected it fitted a boost gauge and all was ok. May not be the same issue here but worth a quick check. If the turbo's not working properly you will be driving an old tracter engine very little power

just had a look at the wastegate and all connected ok, I can move it with pliers too.
that point where it revs over 3000 I loose like forward drive, i have to go back to about 2500.

Thought it was worth a look. I looked at my old forum and I put down exatly what you said. I was getting up to 4000 rev with little more forward acceleration. However I was moving. If your getting 3000 and no movment then I would expect it to be a gear box issue. Seeing as both the gear bos and engine have brains(very little ones) may be worth putting it on Test box at LR cost about 60, Least they will point you in the wright direction. Have you tried talking to there tech team usally very helpfull

Ok just an update, took it to a LR specialist, guy said he's 90% sure it's fuel filter or pump problem. Changed the filter, put ignition to position 2 and had no response from the pump.it's not making a sound or anything, took the carpet up and the pump is getting power. So after I change it see how we go

I've never understood how they can run at all if the pump isn't working. When mine failed I managed to get to the end of the street on the residual pressure then it just died on me (in the middle of a roundabout, obviously!)
