Got my eye on an early disco 2 td5. I'm comfortable with the rest of a discovery but have absolutely zero experience of the TD5.

So, what they like? Bit more refined and economical? What about electrical woes? Other common problems?

the d2 td5s are good capable motors mine has no diff lock but is perfect off road wheel bearings are costly electrical not to bad but best get a hawkeye or nano evo just to keep you right

Mine has been ok I have done diff lock mod only takes about 1 hour and a 300 top turret well worth it... I have had to replace injector harness not a bad job 30 quid from the lanny center

You don't really do any better with a centre diff than the traction control can do, and it reacts far quicker than the driver.

Don't forget that early SLABS control unit cannot live with diff lock light coming on, you need the later one, post 2003 I believe.

Personally I wouldn't both with the centre diff if the TC is working, but it's a Rite of Passage for some.

With my center diff lock on I can get up stuff I couldn't with out it I did do some research before I done mod but it does depend on what you use your lanny for I do a lot of lanning so if I snapped a half shaft with tc u are buggered but I can put diff lock in an get home

you can leave wires off or at least breakable at the switch

Good stuff.

No diff bothers me but I can't see it playing nicely with traction if a 300 much was fitted

If it's an early one it will have the CDL (Centre Diff Lock) guts, you just need to get the linkage from a scrappy.

Dave

PS Traction Control really is awesome

Early D2s including my (2001 TD5 XS) have the CDL gubbins in the transfer box, so it may be possible to crawl under the LAndy with a spanner and turn the spigot to operate the CDL. A pain, but it's another get you home from middle of nowhere option.

D2 TC is Awesome mind you this is my first ever Green Oval product and I'm amazed at it's off road capabilities.

Yer I no that but I do use it wen I am out so for a hour of my time an 20 pound for 300 top turret gone off subject abit now hasn't it .....buy a td5 if you don't want to weld haha

With the greatest repset to you Peter, I disagree. Allow me to explain.

A while ago I was operating a TD5 DII as part of an off-road holidays business. Initially it only had TC and operated very well but had to work hard.

Later I installed the linkage to work the CDL and the difference was really noticeable. The TC had to work much less often and much less hard. PLus the 'absolute' grip grip was increased significantly.

Bearing in mind the TC is operated through the ABS braking system, with CDL you are working the brakes much less often and therefore reducing wear and tear on a vital safety system.

For me the ideal off-road set-up would be 1. Good tyres such as BFG Mud Terrains; 2. TC plus CDL.

Dave

The problem is, Dave, that the TC is predicated on there not being a locking centre diff, so locking it takes away a lot of its functionality?

Peter

Hi Peter, on the face of it I don't see why it should. After all, the TC is not a complicated system as you know, it just compares wheel speeds and slows the fastest turning one, on each axle.

At least with the CDL in operation you have a 50/50 torque split between the axles.

But leaving aside the techy bits, the vehicle just felt better if you know what I mean, much more at ease with itself even in the worst of conditions. And on odd occasions we STILL got stuck !!!
