o_OHello all,
Just picked up a slightly neglected discovery 2 Td5 (10p), excited for the fun to follow!

It leaks from the usual places and have a list of things to sort on it but one thing I’d like to sort before going any further into it is the rough running!

I’ve seen previous threads on this but none seem to have the right solution for me.

It starts on the button, idles well but when it gets to 3k it sounds like it’s about to shake itself apart and puts out a bit of white smoke (haven’t been able to determine if it’s unburnt fuel or coolant). Below 2.7k it runs sweet and is a joy (o_O) to drive.
Things I’ve tried so far:
-Set the correct waste gate actuator pressure (wasn’t even connected when I received the disco) and the lever actuates well and isn’t sticky
-replaced a stinking air filter
-checked red ecu plug (no oil)
-cleaned MAP sensor
-tried disconnecting MAF sensor
-oil level isn’t rising and doesn’t smell of diesel
-doesn’t get hot or use coolant (after a leak was fixed) and no bubbles in header tank
-has previously had an EGR delete
-lift pump in tank replaced along with filter

I am stumped so thought I’d pop on here to see if anyone’s got any better ideas of what it may be.

I don’t have nanocom or Hawkeye, I’m based in Newtownards, Northern Ireland too so I’m not sure how many enthusiasts there are around me!

Thanks all!
Daniel

Hi, surprised that you have not received any feed back as yet??

Usually the ppl on here are very good at giving feed back? So very surprised you have not:confused:

I can only go on what my has been up too!
The last time mine was going above 3k revs!!! There was an issue with transmission :eek:o_O:eek:o_O
No oil leak from the top?? (Head Gasket??).

Kev

Cleaning the MAP/Iat sensor might not be enough. But when mine needed changing it was evil from low road speed then sorted itself out as it got faster, so I doubt it's that. But you'd need live data to be sure.

I don't! But as I said, it's good for first look!! Anything else I can usually sort with you guys or I will take to he garage!!
The times I have used it (Not many) it has worked for me? Not seen the point (As Yet!!) To update with an expensive one!
It sits under the seat! I use it probably every 2-3 months for checking the system?

Foxwells are cheaper than Nanos and seem to do much the same. a few trips to the garage and you have paid for one!;)

In the ABS menu only, in the EMS nothing comes close to nanocom and unfortunately after i bought a Foxwell and cross tested it with hawkeye and nanocom i realised that it is not reliable at all when it comes to the engine management, in that area it does much the same like any other multivehicle tool, it gives false fault codes and erratic live data.:(

Really?
Well that is sad.
But funnily enough it gave enough proper live data for you to be able to tell me to change my MAP/Iat sensor.;)

Now now children :D:p
But thanks guys, I will have a look at Foxwell? And have a play with all! As the garage has Hawkeye and Nancom! Had to use mine for a job at the garage! As the others did not work!!

They update and debug these things all the time. To say nothing of bringing out new models. so maybe ones done after his tests are better. Mine is a few years old.
I do not doubt @sierrafery 's findings at all as he is a very thorough bloke. ;)

That's because IIRC your IAT side was completely fubar then it's no problem while when i cross checked it with nanocom on a well running engine there were differencies in the readings also i've got "absolute pressure low" fault code while there was no code stored in the ECU:mad:... but even then, compared with other multivehicle tools like iCarsoft or Autel it's still the best and they have a quite serious tech support, they told me that some updates are pending but i'm still waiting. In a nutshell for the Td5 EMS only nanocom or hawkeye are 100% reliable.

@Stanleysteamer! All things NASA related:rolleyes::D? I have no problems sending inquiries to @sierrafery for his input/output! But! All things mechanical! That is an open house! As he has said before! He is useless :)

It may be later that I do upgrade to nanocom!!

Kev

NB: any idea when 'Admin' are going to sort out site???? (Open to anyone BTW, reading this Thread!)o_O

Like you mechanical stuff rarely fazes me, Except autoboxes. but tis the electronix that blow my mind. Hence as you say this is where @sierrafery comes into his own.;):):)

Talking of which!!!

I now need to sort out my Starter motor this week:confused: as its now on the "tik tick" only happened today after msg you guyso_O

Spooky:eek:

Sorry guys neglected looking at this for a couple of days

I’m not 100% clued in on tagging or referring to certain bits of text like the experts are so I do apologize I’ll get there one day lol.

It’s now Smokey on startup usual bit of black as it fires up, and some blue/white followed by white (putting that down to condensation). The blue/white, would that be just a bit of oil from the turbo till it’s warm?

Badger 668- i don’t see any oil leaks from the top, gave it a clean and doesn’t seem to be anything after a good week or two of driving. Head gasket wise, I don’t see any tell-tale signs, coolants not dropping, not bubbling in expansion tank but could possibly be a split between 2 cylinders? I’d assume that would put out an awful lot of smoke tho?

Stanleysteamer- I might put a new crank sensor in it anyway and see if that helps. And yes I’m going to get new engine mounts too they seem to have sagged a bit, it struggling and smoking over 3k I would like to hope isn’t engine mounts tho but I could be wrong lol! From seeing the smoke on startup today I’m going to say is definitely smoke not condensation.

Sierrafery- Im going to take it to a mechanic friend of mine who says he can get live data and see if it picks up anything. It’s not as noticeable stationary either only seems to be bad under load. It’s a manual too thought I’d put that in already whoops!

My thoughts are starting to believe it could be flywheel related as well, has some juddering and difficulty getting into gear sometimes. Changed gearbox oil with good quality MTF 94, could maybe do with a slave/master cylinder as well as the bite points quite low but I rather like it lol fairly saves the leg!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions I really appreciate it.

Hi,
Blue/white smoke! Not condensation!! Somewhere around the engine? Seals have gone or on the way out?? Your burning oil somewhere?

Have/are you losing oil??
